Tire ratings?

Ok so, looking at new tires, I'm think I'm gonna go with Nexen roadian a/t's. Only problem is I'm worried about how much they're rated for. The m/t's on my truck now or waited for 8,950 lb each. The nexen a/t's are only rated for 3417 lbs each. Am I looking at the wrong tire? And does it matter? Do I need my tires to be rated for 9k each?

I believe your looking at something wrong. I've never seen a single tire rated for 8950. Even semi truck tires are not rated that high.

You want to look at load range and it will be an alpha character. Ours should be around D, IIRC.

You were right, I should have put my glasses on. That was the dual tire rating. Single tire rating is a little less than half of 9k. These are some really big beefy mud tires. The ones I linked are a little bit less but it still is pretty close and should be fine. Thanks for the help!

My current tires are E rated. Pretty close to 4K for a single tire but they are big beefy mud tires. I think those ones I listed should do just fine. Thanks!

Most if not all tire shops won't mount load range D tires on our truck's. The ones you looking at buying are E rated so you will be good.

Of everyone, it's funny you should say that. The dealership Shamaley Ford off Lee Travino had put load range C tires on our F350...

The problem with going only with the load range rating is that it's a very poor indicator of actual tire WEIGHT rating.

I had a set of 49" Super Swamper Irok tires on a 1995 F350. The weight rating was 3600 lbs. per tire but they were only a "load range" C tire and the maximum inflation pressure was 26 PSI. The weight rating was higher than most 235/85R16 "10 ply" tires at 1/3 the pressure and the sidewalls were at least 3 times as thick/stiff.

The MAIN number you need to look at is the "load index". This will be a number in the 120-130 range that indicates the maximum weight per tire. You'll find that wider tires usually have a higher load index for a given height as the footprint is wider and will typically run cooler. As an example, the Irok tires I had were 21" wide so they took very little pressure to have a high weight rating.

Not all "10 ply" (load range "E") tires are created equal. I've owned A LOT of "D" tires that were far more confidence-inspiring holding weight and handling around corners than a few "E"s....namely Michelin LTXs that even when inflated to their maximum pressure of 80 PSI felt like they were flat.

Thank you all for the information. Taking everything all of you have said into account, do you all think those tires I posted are good? I believe it was Sous that recommended those to me. But I can't remember for sure 100%. It's been a it's been a while.

It was not me who recommended the Nexen tires to you, but I have been told by someone I trust they are a good tire choice. When looking for tires for our Escape earlier this year, I shopped Nexen among other brands.

I recommended them. They are good tires for the cost. I believe Cody uses them as well
