Literally a job for the stake pocket but they paid an engineer to design a "grab handle".
This is what the first price increase is going to cover. They didn't realize how many dies they would go through by putting a hole next to a perfectly good hole.
The tiny man in the video also made the plastic bumper step flex when he stepped on it. So glad they keep adding more plastic to these new vehicles.
Because nothing says "rugged American man" like massaging seats, heated steering wheels, and a truck that almost drives itself.
I was looking at the list of options available on the SD and it is truly amazing times we live in, in which a person who is too short to get into the cab, too weak to open the tail gate, to immobile to step on the rear bumper license plate cut out, cannot use the mirror and rear camera to park the thing, need computer help for braking, cruising and changing lanes, has a personal AI assistant to work the climate control, requires a sensor system to operate high and low beams, needs a Sharper Image butt fondler to stay comfortable, and needs a computer to help one to hook up a hitch and back up a trailer, can plop down 100k and instantly be “country”. All they need now is a electric version so they never have to operate those antiquated fuel pumps and rub shoulders with the riff raff.
You need alot steps and grab holes when trying to retrieve the soccer ***** rolling around in the bed of the mall crawlers now. Lowering the tailgate is like work now.

They even have a button for that now. Auto open and close. Another thing to increase the price.
I dont like the tailgate step just because of the weight it adds to my tailgate. When I have something in the back and have to lift it and then lift the tailgate 1 handed it is too heavy. The solution shouldn't have been adding electronics to it. My OBS tailgate is steel and I can slam it with 1 hand if I wanted.
I wonder if they'll make the 23 tailgates so you can't just steal the taillights without setting off the alarm. Maybe the auto open/close will prevent you from opening or closing without it being activated? That would be lame. Why even have a handle on it at that point.
GM is always first to try out the yuppie stuff. I also think they have a lifetime contract signed in blood with some plastic supplier out their though.

Truck camper tie downs work great as a step. You get one on each corner.

I used those and the stake pockets and if needed stepped up onto the tire or rear bumper. A lot more solid than some abs plastic. I have the extended steps on my 22 F350 and the ends of the steps flex with me and a 5 gallon gas can. That is weak.
I hate the new plastic bed caps. I wish I could have just done an over the rail bedliner but it would look atrocious with the caps removed. Another WTAF idea with plastic as the solution to a problem that didn't exist.
