Couldn't you, say... open the cover? before climbing up to presumably look in the bed? That would uncover the hand hold and allow you to see in the bed once you have climbed up.
I do not climb on the sides of my truck. Good way to scratch it up. Open the tailgate, climb in. Or use the bumper and climb over? Still seems like a solution to a problem that didn't exist.
Hard to come up with '23 WTF's until there is an order guide or build and price released. The looks are fine, it is a truck. The steps are gimmicky trash IMO.
Some covers have a frame that attaches to the bed rail. The removeable part of the cover secures to the frame. In these cases, the frame will block the stake pocket.
As far as a solution for a problem that doesn't exist, I recall previous posts where members complained about not having built-in side steps like the GM trucks have. Their only solution was extended running boards, rear corner steps from Amp (I think), or a step stool. As with everything, some want it while others don't want it.

The corner bumper step from Amp was a solution. It uses the same bumper as every other truck and so the people who want it can order it and the people who don't didnt have to. The bed step is a dumb idea with how tall these trucks and the besides are. If I am holding anything 1 foot in a hole in the side of the bed isnt going to give me a very stable step. The new side step requires you to either balance without using your hands OR use 1 hand and whatever you are picking up has to be light enough for 1 hand to hold and lift over the bedside.
Well If throwing extra crap on a functional truck isn't an issue along with the added cost at purchase and future failures of said extras then I want a really nice ball cap and a really nice shirt thrown in and of course has to be made in America. What the hell upcharge the truck another couple hundred money's no issue. We're just suckers for new shiny gadgets and gimmicks.

Another dumb idea.
And we haven't seen it yet but they have said there will also be a retractable step, to step to the bedside step haha. I imagine it will be like the AMP steps.

Might as well just include a rolled up ladder that people can throw over the bedside to climb up like they have for 2nd story houses for egress in an emergency. It would only need about 5 rungs.
Next Ford is going to put a hoist that swivels out of the way with a swing seat so people can just use their FordPass app to hoist themselves into the bed that 1 time they actually put something back there.

Even better just add hydraulics on all 4 corners like the low riders. From the Ford app just use it to raise and lower the truck when needing something from the bed.

Ford engineers need to be reading Lowrider magazine for ideas. These guys have bed access nailed.
I’m the RV guy and I preferred the XLT. I don’t haul gravel or dirt in it (I have no need to), but I will use it as a truck if I do need to. I wash it often and treat it good though. Even the Lariat seemed too fancy… but to each his own. My truck doesn’t define me.
Your truck is not how you define yourself, but some members of this forums define you by it.
All vehicles are getting complicated. My wife's top trim Audi is over the top for me. I appreciate most of the features of my '19, fully loaded Platinum. There are a few features of the '23 that I find appealing...I really like the HUD, but I'm not upgrading any time soon.
As far as real men driving XLs, that's a load of crap. I'm sure that most XL owners are very real men but so are the Lariat, Platinum, and Limited owners. I didn't order my truck to haul loads of gravel or hay, although it has done both. It's job is to drag my fifth wheel to far off places, and to keep my wife and I comfortable while doing it. Mission accomplished.

2028 will have the impaired driver detection with retina tracking and built in kill switch.
All of those are real things mandated on 2025 vehicles btw.
