Door map pockets

Custom Cab Map Pockets, 1964-66 Truck (autoobsession.com) Is anyone familiar with these? The thing that intrigues me is it looks like someone is finally making them in something other than black

Thanks for that link. I have been looking for another NOS pocket, not the correct color, for a couple years now. Cannot bring myself to install a pair of the black ones from Bob Drake. I am going to request a color swatch to see if it is a close-enough match to my trucks’ Caribbean Turquoise . But their ad is kind of vague, not quite clearly stating that the trim rings are included. And the description is careful to point out that non-stocked orders can take a real long time to fulfill. Sounds very reminiscent of SMS Auto Fabrics problems. I am going to call them.

Note: just got off the phone with John from Auto Obsessions, from the above link above

The pockets are made by Distinctive Industries. I now believe that the ones Drake sells are the same. I also just called Bob Drake. Unlike Auto Obsessions, they stated they have no intention of selling the pockets in any color other than black, even if available. Just like Henry Ford. Well, they are not getting my business.

John from Auto Obsessions is working on getting me a color sample, and is inquiring with Distinctive Industries bout lead times for getting the various other vinyl colors. I will try to remember to report back.

Double check that you're getting the right phone number- apparently they've had scammer problems recently impersonating their business.

I have contacted this company and they are going to verify that it is the complete pocket and trim as the picture shows. I also contacted Bob Drake about 4 months ago and he told me the same thing, that he had no intentions of doing anything but black. I asked him if he had people requesting the 3 factory colors they would have come in which was whit black and red and he said yes but he was only doing black. And got kind of nasty and defensive. When that happened I said business is about customer wants and needs not suppliers opinions. And if he thought he was Henry Ford. I hope these are the real deal and BD chokes on his black ones!

FYI: the original ones had drains in bottom and could be used as an ice chest. Not sure about these.

The ones in the link look really cool. I hope they work out to be legit. I have Bob Drake's in my 64 because black works for me and I am not trying to make them match anything. The problem right now with BD is that they are getting out of doing anything truck related. Bob's son has taken over the day to day operations and I hear he is not a car guy... or at least not a truck guy. If anyone is familiar with their Ford approved side view mirrors they are absolutely the best reproductions ever made and they have chosen not to continue making them... Sad. They are just a few miles from me and I have been in there multiple times to request they continue to support the F100 customer. So far no go. Looking forward to see if the Auto Obsessions ones pan out.

As stated in the ad from the link, price is each, not significantly more than buying a pair from Bob Drake. I’m waiting to hear back on waiting times for various color selection, but very first of all, trying to get my hands on material sample to see if it is a close enough match.

Note: Distinctive Industries just informed me 2-3 month lead time. You cannot order direct from them, must order through a dealer, such as shown in skidioorulz link. They are shipping to me today a sample of the L-2929 Turquoise.

Just FYI - they did come in more than 3 colors. My buddies 1966 with blue seats also had blue map pockets. See the pictures below. As Ford ran out of colors blue was eventually all they had left in both the map pockets and the arm rests. They also offered Parchment map pockets in original trucks. Not sure about Green.

The 1975 edition of the MPC only lists Blue and Red as available. They ran out of Red before they ran out of Blue.

This is what Distinctive Industries sent Auto obsessions as an example of their pockets. Still very confusing whether or not it is the entire unit or just the vinyl. Is Bob Drakes price of 250 dollars for one unit or two? If for one I really doubt the one from Auto Obsessions is the entire unit for 126 dollars. 126 will probably only get you the vinyl.

Bob Drake is for 2 door pockets with trim, only black.

That picture is of an original vinyl with the original brass YKK zipper. If they are using the correct zipper (still available from YKK I believe) I'd be amazed, but it doesn't look like it on the web site. So many reproductions could be done right with just a little more work but seems most would rather put out a substandard product than to try to actually make a correct replacement.

Auto obsessions said that the mfr said they are using a metal zipper not plastic. That still is vague as to what metal. Think I will order two and see what I get. If not what is pictured they will go back.

Bob Drake does use a black plastic zipper with a black metal pull tab. I am sure that it functions better over time but I agree that if you are doing a reproduction then it should be just that, "a reproduction". But the inside container is ABS, which is an upgrade from the original.... The quality overall is very nice.
