It is OK the ring gear is shot and the flex plate will have to be replaced....so it has to come apart.

Thank you everyone for the insight. I’m just trying to get this running, but the plan I have is a buddy of mine and I are going to do a engine swap during this winter. So getting the starter was just something to do.
we cut the shield off, have a new flex plate on the way. This afternoon we’re gonna throw in the. We starter from the different vendor.
What you can do is get a big screwdriver, and if you can wedge it in there someplace, pry the starter toward the engine while the bolts are a little loose, and while you keep pressure on it with the screwdriver, tighten the bolts. That might last a couple of starts before it pushes the starter away from the engine again.
The teeth are a little chewed up where the starter has been missing them, but I think they will still work if the starter was moved over where it's supposed to be. Keeping it there is going to be the problem.
