in regards to the m5od what would cause to front factory metal shift plugs to repeatedly push out as shown in the photo below. to me it seems like the shift rail is sliding out to far in 2nd gear in turn pushing out the plug for the 1/2 shift rail. I'm I wrong to think a worn out shift fork would allow the rail to slide out to far? I should also add that it feels like there are 2 detents for second. just trying to get as much info as possible before I tear into it. Keep in mind that these are the front 3 factory metal plugs.
All the plugs from the factory that I have seen are rubber. They crack and leak and users have been replacing them with what you have for a long time. If you want to inspect the forks for wear pull the top cover since it is only 10 bolts. You can put RTV around the cap plugs to stop them from coming out unless you have a rail that is really hammering it. Also if you remove the cover you can change fluid and just refill from the top which makes it very easy. Any slop in your shifter can be fixed with a very inexpensive shift repair kit which makes it like new again. One tip is to not rest your hand on the shifter when driving as it causes premature fork wear. If you want to replace the cap plugs they are available. I think they are primarily used as freeze plugs so that's what to look for.
