Just got my new shift forks in the mail and already have the top off the gearbox. I have a general idea of how to replace them, but are there any known write-ups of how to do it or any special tips, tricks or things to remember? It doesn't look too intimidating but I know there are a few small springs and what not in there that I don't want to break or lose. Thanks in advance.
Ok, whatever you do, do not completely remove the rails (rods) that the shift forks slide on. I made that mistake and messed up a rail trying to get it back in, as I damaged a spring terribly. Wound up going to a junk yard to get a new complete top cover. Make sure you have the correct size punch to drive out the pins that hold the forks in place. Be gentle with the rails. Put some good sealant on the 3 rubber plugs that are removed for the rails, or even better, replace them with 5/8" freeze plugs.
What caused the need for this? Did one of your forks break?

Reason: Grammar....
Thanks for the info, I ordered the dorman freeze plugs too.
I bought a ranger for a couple hundred bucks with no 3rd or 4th gear, I knew that that's not usually how manual transmissions wear out so I was thinking it would be an easy fix and took the top cover off to find the 3/4 shift fork to be severely worn.
I hope you didn't order your forks from "American Powertrain Warehouse". They sent me the wrong forks & won't reply to any attempt to contact them. I was out $75. Unless maybe I can find a buyer for the forks they sent me...
Resting a hand on a shifter in these trucks is supposedly the #1 cause of fork wear. Being that the 3/4 fork is worn, that's probably the cause. Good luck, post back if it works.

Another wear item to cause forks to wear out is the center plate that holds the bearings into the back of the main case. If there is wear, there then the main shaft can move back and forth causing the forks to wear out. Grab your main shaft and see if it moves in and out. If so your rear plate is worn out.
