As most of the posts above state, you can't hardly go wrong with either one. Both are based on proven designs and neither has any weaknesses other then the inherent short comings of the 30-30 round. Shop around and find a buy, I picked up a somewhat worn model 94 for only $135 to keep in my truck.
MARLIN!! in my opionion 10x better then winchester, i have been more then happy with my 336 then any other rifle. i can shoot a 3" at 100 yrds w/o a scope. thats pretty good for a .30/30 if you ask me. with the flat top reciever, side ejection and smooth lever you deffinately cannot go wrong. winchester levers dont impress me much. GO MARLIN. you wont regret it. take the .35 rem into account also if you plan on purchasing a 336. great brush caliber from what i have read.
Having never shot a marlin I admit I am biased. I own several Winchester lever guns and love them all... The 2 30/30's I have are accurate enough for 100 yards which is all your going to get out of a 30/30. I do prefer the top eject and the western feel of it though. The lines of the Winchester are much more traditional than the Marlin, but then again I shoot Cowboy Action.

Try the Marlin site, they have a very good forum there and people that can speak on all types of rifles. This is where I went to learn about the rifle I bought. A Marlin 1895 lever action in 45-70. Putting a scope on a rifle is not only for long range shots. It is also used to get a clear veiw of what you're planning on shooting to make double sure this is what you should be shooting. There are times the game is not standing still on bare ground, but may be in brush or woods. So if you're not sure do not fire.
