Fuel Selector Valve

Ok, i tried a search and came up with nothing. Im having trouble getting gas to my carb, and im thinking that the selector valve is stuck.

Has anyone ever replaced these? Or put a different style in?

Do you guys know if the return lines are routed though it?

i dont think the return lines are routed thru it, at least they werent thru mine. it should be really easy to replace just when u unplug em make sure u plug the lines unless u want gas everywhere. i took my tank out from behind my seat and i disconnected the line to drain the gas and i dindt get it over to the bucket in time and it went everywhere. so plug em cause it WILL come out lol.
it should be located on the drivers side on the underside of the panel, either right under the cab or a little farther back, if u didnt already kno where it was.
what year is ur truck?
hope that helps lol

My truck is a 78 F-250. I think the valve is on the frame, right under the drivers seat. A napa down here sells an aftermarket solenoid valve, with a dash mounted switch for 44$. This unit dosent have return lines though, thats why i needed to know. Im probably going to replace it just because the OE one is old. I have to check for sure though to see if it has return lines. I cant believe more people havent replaced these.

Thanks

Rick

On my '79 4x4 it's attached to crossmember in front of the rear tank, under the box. Easy to change if you have the part.

"Return lines??? We dont need no stinkin' return lines"
Seriously, as far as I know, the return lines are only used on electric fuel pumps....the engine driven type have a feed line from each tank to the valve - then 1 line to the fuel pump - and one line from the fuel pump to the carb.

So its safe to assume that we have a 3 port selector valve. I didnt think on a caborated system the return lines would route through it, but i wasnt sure. I can get the selector from napa, and i think im going to, and advance auto has a 6 port.

I wish someone knew for sure.

If you have return lines for some reason, they need to run through a 6-port selector switch. It would be odd that a '78 would have return lines though. If your truck has fuel running back to the tank from the fuel pump or a fuel filter with a bypass port, it needs to return through the selector to keep from over-filling the tank you're not drawing fuel from. Are you sure that those extra lines aren't just going to the vapor canister? If they are, they don't need to run through the selector.
To get it running (and eliminate the selector), disconnect the hoses from the selector (the one to the front and the one from the tank you want to use) and splice them together with a short length of fuel line.

I have had two valves go bad on different '79 trucks. Mine have stuck so it pulls fuel from both tanks. If one tank is empty, it pulls air no matter how full the other tank is.

you might have to search in fuel systems or something, but I had a post about this once.

If your truck is carb. its a simple 3 port switch valve. Ford wants alot of money for one. JC crappy has them fairly cheap and the basically bolt right on. You have to cut off the factory wire terminal and crimp a different connector on I thing a ring connector, but other than that its an easy 20 minute swap.

also it should have only 3 lines, 2 from the 2 tanks and 1 going to the fuel pump. And like was stated earlier it right in front of the rear end.

Thanks for the info guys. Im going to napa today to buy that valve. Im not sure if the one in my truck is bad, all i know is that i wasnt getting fuel to the carb. Ive already bought a pump and filter. I just want to eliminate all potential problems while im at it. The truck is sitting at a friends about an hour away, so diving into the job and running for parts is a real PITA.

I replaced my fuel selector on my 74 F-250 and it was mounted on the outside of the frame rail right below the rear of the cab. The one I purchased was the 3 hose style. It used one line to the fuel pump and the other two came from each gas tank. Both of my gas tanks each had there own overflow tubes running out of the top of the tank. So there should be no reason for any return lines.
