The hood was up for a year but the bigger screw up was a bolt was left out of the intake manifold and the hole was open to the crankcase and the gasket leaked also allowing water into the number 5 intake port but the valve was closed. I don't think I would want to use muriatic acid in this case because it's so strong. But I do use it for removing rust and I follow up with a mix of baking soda and Dawn dishwashing detergent. The detergent is to make the soda more effective at neutralizing the acid by making it stick to the surface and not just drain off. I also plan to do the same treatment with the vinegar because it's in such a critical area. I have the intake off and don't see any evidence that any water got into any other cylinders. And if the valve was closed not much would have gotten into the 5 cylinder. I already turned the motor by hand not thinking that a ring could have been stuck. I should have sprayed the cylinders with something before trying to turn the motor. All in all its not nearly as bad as it could have been.
