I've got a 65 Fairlane with a 289 the needed a new distributor. When I pulled the old one, the oil pump shaft fell out and all the way to the pan.
First question: will this cause problems at least until I can get the car to a lift?
#2: How can I install another shaft without having it fall through as well? Working in an apartment prohibits me from putting it on stands or having the car torn up for more than a day.
I've helped gramps tear down lots of small block, as well as Fe's and found an oil pump rod in the pan, seems as though if it goes to the bottom and lays flat, no problem. If it happened to wedge between 2 rods, it might tear a hole in the pan. When putting one back in, you can put a small piece of tape over the end going into the dist, holding it there while installing the dist.
The drive shaft is supposed to have a clip to keep that from happening but if the shaft is installed with the clip toward the pump it can do what yours did. With that said I've seen them where the clip broke and flew off and also where the clip didn't grab the shaft tight enough and slid down when the distributor was removed. Same thing happened; into the pan it fell.
I'd "bar" the engine over a few times to make sure there's no interference with the old shaft, which most likely will just sit on the bottom of the pan harmlessly as previously mentioned.
