Oil Pump Shaft Question

I dropped the oil pan and oil pump on my 66 352, the oil pump shaft came out while pan was still in crossmember, and I cannot figure out if the round keeper on shaft goes towards the pump side or block side? Anyone remember off hand
?
Thanks!
P.S. Had a half of hand full of coke/carbon in bottom of the oil pan.

I believe the round keeper is supposed to keep the shaft from dropping from the dizzy/ top.... (mine dropped into the dang pan...)
I dropped my pan and found an extra shaft lying in the bottom...
I took took the entire thing out, cleaned it, tested the oil pump,
and checked the box that says "learn the hard way"

Up-towards the distributor. Keeper only sold with the shaft, not available by itself.

just put oil pump and shaft back in, had wife bump the starter and the shaft did not turn, should it? took a small ignition wrench and the shaft turned freely. Any experience out there?

the shaft should turn.. the dizzy should crank it.
Had the same experience. is the keeper still in? Its not necessary, but helps the shaft from not fallin into the pan. that being said, seat the shaft into the dizzy.
when you crank the engine, keep your ears tuned for low oil pressure.
turn off immediately if that shaft isn't spinning the pump.
anyone have a trick to keep that shaft seated? Smarted guys always have a way to work around these situations.

The little clip goes up, its job is to keep the shaft from pulling out of the oil pump if you remove the distributor.
