I backed my F-350 into the garage this morning to unload it. After I was done, hopped in, started it up, went to shift and the shifter popped and went limp in my hand.
About a decade ago I had a pin shear in the steering column, and had to replace it, so the first thing that went through my mind was it failed again. Then I started taking the dash apart and heard something hit my floorboard.
So I bend myself into a pretzel to look up under the dash and see the bracket from the transmission shift cable loose on the back of the shifter assembly. I can’t remember if I ever took that bracket off, or the bolts just loosened over time, but I was able to get it tightened back up to work for now on one bolt. It being loose allowed leverage to be put on the bolt and shear half the threaded casting off.
This arrives next week, and under $30.
So if you get to crawling around, check your bolts!
