V10 pulling power

Ok I am probably asking a question that has been asked to death. I have a 95 CC F350 with powerstroke. I pull a 27 foot camper weighing about 7500 pounds and also a 81/2 by 24 foot enclosed car hauler. I have been plagued with overheating exhaust temps and once in a while overheating trans temps. I have modified exhaust several times. Thr truck would pull the camper up a hill at 70 miles an hour but the exhaust temp would be way over 1400 degrees.
Ok now the reason I am asking this here is. I keep telling myself if I had a gas engine I wouldnt be worrying about exhaust temps and turbo problems. I have never owned a V10.
I keep thinking to myself that if the V10 pulls as good as the 7.3 then it would be better because I never heard anyone say watch your exhaust temps with a gas engine.
But I sure dont want to trade my powerstoke on a V10 and find out it wont pull as good. I could care less about gas mileage.
I would really like some good advice on the pros and cons of the 2 engines.
I have been thinking of trading for either the 6.0 or the V10.
Thanks in advance for your input. Sorry for long post.

Hey Rick,

Welcome to FTE!!!

I pull a 30' TT with my 99 F-250 V10 and it is great!!! I have pulled my camper on a round-trip from Atlanta to San Diego with no troubles on the mountains out west. I will say that if you decide to get the V10, you will definately want to get the 4.30 gears.

I have never towed anything with a PowerStroke, so I don't know if you will be happy with the V10 or not, but I definately am!!!

BTW, I average 9.0 MPG when towing my camper.

Hope this helps,

Jeff

Hi Jeff
Thanks for the info. I tow between SC and Fla and to Ohio sometimes. I get about 14mpg to Fla if I run under 70 and about 10 mpg going to Ohio. 10 mpg wouldnt bother me I am not to worried about fuel mileage. But I am sick and tired of having to slow down on slight grades because my exhaust temp is over 1200 degrees. I swore I would never go back to gas after owning the PSD but now I am having 2nd thoughts. I never worried about EGT's before I owned a diesel.
I am always towing a trailer somewhere. I dont want to run 80mph just a consistent 70 without having to look at EGT gauge every time I go up an incline and have to slow down because of it.
Thanks again.

I had a '96 with the PSD, and it pulled wonderfully.

I currently have an '01 with the V10 which pulls wonderfully.

My mileage is worse, but I don't have the expensive oil changes, filter changes, high maintenance, high initial cost, etc. that comes with the PSD. In all honesty, I'll have to admit that the PSD had a slight advantage, but not as much as some would like to think.

If it helps, I'll be getting gas again next time around.

Geez, you sound like me, I couldn't wait to trade in my non-turbo'd 93 7.3 diesel for the 95 PSD, that is until someone said; "oh yeah, when the EGT goes over 1,000 degrees, it's bad for it". So my 9 year old son was on gauge duty, he used to watch the gauge when we'd start up into a mountain range, and sure enough, part way up he'd call out that the gauge was into the orange, and I'd have to back out of it.

Now I keep my foot pretty much planted in it, and go up and over the top. My towing mileage is a little less, but honestly I've never, ever got anywhere near the mileage alot of these diesel owners say they get. I don't have to put 14+ quarts of oil in the oil pan. My oil filters cost $5. I don't have a fuel separator/filter. My front tires, brakes, ball joints, shocks, etc last longer due to less weight mass up front. The $5,000 I saved by not checking the diesel option will buy a heck of alot of gas. Sure, at 300,000 miles that diesel may still be running, but what else will be left of the truck ?

Besides, you get; "the badges" "You get those beautiful, sparkling, gleaming in the sunlight V-10 badges".

From: Eastern CT.
I just traded in my 99' F-350, PSD, auto, for an 04' F-350, V-10, 6-speed, 4:30 LS, this V-10 rocks, it pulls just as good as the PSD, for the amount I have pulled my trailer so far, I pull my skid-steer,and with the trailor it's around 8,000 lbs, and with the many hills here in eastern CT, the auto seemed to be lacking, but the 6-speed seems great for these hills. And like I have read,,, the V-10, just starts to breath at 3,000 RPM, even with the 4:30 gears I have hit 70 mph, in 3rd gear, many times , and I just turned 700 miles on the truck !

Mileage could be better, is around 10,mpg, but my PSD, around here only acheived 11.5, like 2 weeks before I traded it, and that was the norm for the 4 years I had it !

10-burnin, 6-turnin, sometimes 4-smokin,,,

Later,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Mark
