Back flushing fun!

Flushing and flushing and flushing still have bad temps. I have been using lime away as well to try to break up the garbage right in the newer oil cooler.. truck has been bullet proofed for about 30 k miles now. The deltas have been slowly rising.

At least you're getting it out. I've had good luck with Cummins Restore and Restore Plus (basically the same stuff as the Ford VC9 flush) before. But is time consuming and no fun for sure.

Here's the Cummins restore product on Amazon, just google around and pick your favorite retailer for the stuff if you want to go that route.

Yeah it looks like beach sand. Not really rust. I'm sitting here waiting for the temps to come down so I can drain it again and pump cold water through it and not hurt anything.

I poured CLR into the oil cooler through the top of the engine and let it sit for 20 minutes each time when i did mine a few years ago. Did it 3 times, flushed with the garden hose connected to my air compressor to let air hit the system to break it up with the water. City water pressure with 50 psi shots every 5 to 10 seconds for a few minutes. Continued to flush for 1 hour. Then filled with two bottles of VC9 and water and drove it around for 1/2 hour. Drained and refilled with water 4 times, then 4 flushes of distilled water, then refilled with straight ELC coolant, since the engine with hoses removed holds about 3 to 3.5 gallons of water. I dumped in 3 jugs of ELC coolant and then last gallon i diluted 50/50 and filled it up. The biggest help was a coolant filter system. Changed the first 3 filters 2 weeks apart, then next 3 one month apart, then once every 6 months like now. My deltas are never higher than 12 degrees towing our 9500 pound camper now. Couldnt br happier.

I just loosened the bottom hose, pushed it off with a piece of wood since its hot, and let it drain. Refilled with water. Never had one issue...

Look at what's coming out now?!

What do you think this is! Got to be a sticker or something right?

6.0? you'll get casting sand out if it for a long time. Coolant filter is the only way to go. Even after all the flushing, you'll get a load of crap in a filter. When I did mine, opened all the pet*****, radiator drain, and stuck a garden hose in the overflow tank and let it run for a while.

Agreed. I run coolant filters on all my diesels (even the Cummins ones that don't necessary need a coolant filter). Coolant filters are cheap and I can see no advantage to having dirty/ debris filled coolant.
