ZF6 issue

My 2000 plow truck was making a noise that sounded like a bad throw out or input bearing, stuck a known good clutch (luk) setup in it. Same noise still present, under load through the zf6- takeoff or coasting in gear. Gone in N or if clutch is pushed in.

Well I drained fluid and removed inspection cover, here is what I found laying inside the bottom of the zf6 by the drain plug.

Now what?

Looks like a case bolt to me. There are 2 I believe it is thslst bolt the center section to the front case half from inside the trans. Possibly one of them have backed out. There pretty simple to pull apart out of the case. Just require lot of special stuff to break gear clusters down. If your able to pull trans out you should be fine pull rear case off and inspecting to see what you find.

I can pull trans back out, just annoying since I just put it back in with a new clutch….

Not sure. Dont know if it was the noise. No wear marks or anything showing it was causing issue. Will put fluid back in tomorrow and see if anything is different.

Tpayne brings up a good point. Can you see any type of witness mark anywhere on the head from a socket or underneath where it would make contact with mating part?

I’ve been following the Facebook thread as well (wow, those guys are nuts) and see someone showing an outside case bolt of similar length and size. Are those gold anodized on your unit? The one in his photo wasn’t but that doesn’t mean the factory didn’t change at some point. It’s entirely possible someone at the plant dropped an extra bolt inside the unit somehow.

BUT you also said something about it still making noise? Or did I read that wrong?

If the noise remains then I agree most likely is some type of gear train alignment issue due to the missing bolt.

Or the crazy answer, is it possible this actually has nothing to do with the noise as strange as that may be?

Hey Eric, Here are those pics i promised you.

I dont remember my ZF6 having any external zinc chromate plated bolts.

These are the only photos i can find with bolted assemblies called out.

Those were the ones I was refering to. It's been a while since Ive had one apart but for some reason I remember those being allen head bolts. Also not as long as that one is. Only place that bolt rings a bell to me is one of the main case bolts on the outside.

I believe all the internal bolts are Allen heads. There is a rebuild video on YouTube that would have actual proof of this.

This kind of reminds me of a movie named Ensign Pulver, that I used to watch when I was a kid.

Not sure what that movie is..

put fluid back in and drove more. Shifted perfect, noise still there. Starting to think the transfer case is the issue. I am planning to put my np271 manual case in to verify if it solves the issue. I will then have another 271 case rebuilt by a local guy with all the updates mentioned in my other thread, “Other thread” and use that rebuilt case in my “good” truck. Also going to check the rear diff fluid while working on this.

Just crazy! It is possible thats its been in there since day one and just heavy enough it has never bounced while submerged. Thats incredible if that's the case but plausible none the less.

years ago I found a GM branded wrench in the fender well of a car when changing out the automatic antennae. owner said it rattled only on big pot holes and dealer could never find the issue
