on the 1995 2wd i had the u joints weren't that bad but were out of grease and starting to rust. they made all kinds of noise under the truck and felt solid when i checked them. i knew they were original with 140k on them so i replaced them and all noises went away. it got worse on the interstate vs 40 mph ish.

glad you found the problem and it wasn't a complete tear down or replacement of the trans!! that bolt you found is still crazy though!
