Reman PSP

Anyone have an issue with a “new” reman Cardone Power Steering pump. I just went through a debacle (posted on my thread) and it whined more than John McEnroe in the finals. I put a 86 Bronco pump on today from the Pick I found—silent. No whine.

At this point I am not sure I would ever buy a Cardone again, but maybe this is a feature problem of Remans?

I put a NAPA reman on my truck. Whined. Tried different fluid brands including Motorcraft. Did all the bleed tricks. Still whined. Put on a pump from a '88 Crown Victoria. Dead silent and more power (less effort)

And the thirty something year old CV pump? Cheap farm store brand fluid and no bleeding other than lock to lock.

Cardone is like Dorman and most other parts manufacturers and reman houses; Their quality control is very spotty, and has been getting worse. Cardone is the only game in town for reman distributors, and I have had very poor results from their units. Like you, I was having problems and the reman dist was giving me worst symptoms than the original. I went ahead and took the new reman apart, and while it looked good on the outside, it still had the old caked on grease and cooked oil on the inside, they hadn't touched it. I paid $80 for it and they had not even replaced the pickup module. I rebuilt it myself and it worked good after that. The reason I did that, all the parts stores carry their distributors, so looking out for myself, I rebuilt it myself with a new module.

FWIW, my original pump makes some noise if it is a teaspoon low or high on fluid especially near the limit of travel.

Atsco power steering is good stuff we sold those years ago. Remanufactured in Phoenix, AZ, you can get them from Rock Auto. Dorman is the worst brand out there and Cardone is a close 2nd. Its hard to get good parts, most auto parts stores push there China built store brand crap.

That is because people that are price shopping were given the cheap crap parts price.
You now go into the next store and find the price is higher you walk out not going back to by the part.
You never asked why it was higher.
So stores can compete they all give the lowest price crappie parts.

I bet if you asked they do list the better part but it will be more money.
I asked for the better starter solenoid at NAPA and he was a little shocked I did.
BTW he had the better part in stock would of had to order the cheap one that I did not want anyway.

I'll chime in, and say yes, you need to buy the better/higher priced item from NAPA. A few bucks more, but works for a long time.

People need to stop going cheap. It's the old saying, You get what you pay for.

If you're feeling rich you can buy a Ford C2 pump with Saginaw internals! That would cure the traditional Ford whine.

https://leepowersteering.com/product...mp-replacement

Only thing to note is that the pressure fitting is metric, so to install one of these in a Bullnose you've have to order one of the later year power steering lines...I think 1992-1996. I'm not 100% sure when exactly Ford changed that fitting from metric to standard. Otherwise the lines are identical from 1980-1996.

I have actually been thinking of a Saginaw convert as a result of this. The new (as in actually new) C2s are 180 and up, so why not purchase something like this, without all the bracket fabrication? Nice link and share. Saving.

I know that if you did as regular convert, you would need to get the high pressure line from the Van—because the fitting sizes are different from the pump to the steering box.

About 4 years ago the ‘94 Bronco p/s pump was leaking from the front seal so I went to NAPA for a reman pump. The first one didn’t work. It didn’t have much pressure output. I returned that one only to find the second one screamed like a banshee. On to pump three which was not as loud but still louder than my original pump. NAPA basically told me to live with it. They wouldn’t warranty pump three.

A couple months ago I installed a Lares pump on the Bronco II. I have a couple thousand miles on it and so far so good. It is very quite for a Ford C2 pump..almost like a Saginaw pump.

The Lares is what I have been eyeballing if I do not do the conversion. It is good that someone has experience. They offer a NEW not reman option, but they are more expensive--not as expensive as the C2/Saginaw guts version posted above.

Sorry to hear about NAPA not taking care of you. My local NAPA has replaced a number of front calipers for me a few years back, even one a year past the warranty, They knew the reman Co. had an issue.

They told me it was “normal” Ford pump whine. I think they got tired of me complaining about the poor quality of the rebuilds. All of that had to be within a week since I would install the pump, find out that it was junk and then go back to exchange it for another one.

Well, if it helps. The reman pump my car had began to make a whine noise after the timing belt change, but a couple years later, I don't even hear it anymore.

I have installed two reman C2 pumps in 2 different Bullnose trucks and had good luck with them. I forget what brands they were, but they came from RockAuto. The first one was super quiet, but the second one made a tiny bit of noise. I have a new C2 reman pump installed in my current project truck (w/302), but haven't started it yet. I had custom hoses made to run a Toyota steering gear that I swapped into my '52 pickup.

I was going to buy this Lee pump with the Saginaw internals, but I decided to take a chance on another reman pump. If it gives me any grief at all or if it won't run the Toyota box, I'll swap in one of these Lee units. I read that the standard C2 pumps are fine, so I'm not too worried about it, and the remans are cheap.

Only downside is that my cheap power steering pump puller kit is getting pretty sketchy and I'm not sure it would survive another pulley pull and re-installation lol.
