Another 5R110W Fluid Temp malfunction

So about 9 months ago, I had the 5r110W in my 08 CC 4x4 6.4 rebuilt. Since then I've had it back for dropping out of gear. Hard shifts, down shifting at the wrong time and other such symptoms. The code that I keep pulling are P0710 and P0713. Which is trans fluid temp sensor open or high voltage. So, as I had a longer drive tomorrow than my normal weekly runs, I decided to drop the pan and just put the sensor in my self. However, there was little change to the shifting, though it did seem better. I did keep ForScan running while I was driving. Temp shows -68 most of the time.

Oh and the truck does have an EGR delete, with updated PCM. I don't think anything has changed with the TCM, and it looks stock to me...

So the things that come to mind are:

1. Harness (inside trans)
2. TCM module,
3. Grounds (i've been burned so many times on these that I rarely strike those off a troubleshooting list).

My question is. Does anyone have the wire diagram for the tcm harness so I can check the wires to see if the sensor shows open or changes when warming up? (test at the TCM) or other thoughts on diag on this? A sensor was 20$ the harness and TCM are quite a bit more, so I want to do a bit more digging before I just fire the parts canon again.

TIA

Here's an o-scope from the drive, with the TFT and ECT sensor showing (along with other things).

Just in case some one wants to see a picture of the sensor lines...

I had a similar issue; the fluid was low. Didn't really show low on the dip stick, but my tranny guy said that is what it was. They are supposed to be work horses.

The sticks are really useless for a perfect read. Unless you drop the pan and do a complete drain and add the recommended amount, it's a shot in the dark as far as level.

If it were me, I'd add a few pints at a time, and see what you see.

Wow! I wondered about that but wasn't sure. When I dropped the pan to do the sensor - I also put a filter and gasket as well. I added I think 9.5 qts. I didn't see it on the dipstick.

If you happen to know how much I should have added let me know. My reading said some where between 8 and 12. But you are right, that dipstick just doesn't show right. I'm going to keep researching though. Because it's what I thought when it first started showing issues. But again.. that dipstick.

You should be running anywhere from 8 to 10 quarts of trans fluid. The spec on the fluid is important.

How would you do a complete drain? How do you get fluid out of the torque converter (roughly 8 quarts) or the clutches (another one or two quarts) and the passages (maybe another quart)?

If you only drop the pan you have NO IDEA of how much fluid is left in the transmission.

The transmission holds around 18 quarts of fluid. It won't even operate with only 8 to 10 quarts in it.

Good point Mark, BUT

This isn't a fresh build with a dry converter. You can't drain the converter with just dropping the pan for a filter change, I've only ever had to add 8-10 quarts.

my opinion is everything went down hill when ford got rid of the paper toilet roll looking bypass filters used in previous generation ford trannys. these filters cuaght a lot of metal dust.

where does the metal dust go now...well...it gets collected by the coils of all the controls .....and some gets collected by the pan magnet.

if you just do a drain and fill...it would take 17 drain and fills to get all the used fluid out. so drain and fills could be fine...if you do them often.

but you will never get the metal dust that collects on the coils of all the controls.

The toilet paper rolls filtered 10% of the cooler flow. When this was eliminated the internal filter was upgraded to filter a finer particle than the toilet paper roll filter. The internal filter sees 100% of the flow. So the new system filters 10 times the amount of fluid to a cleaner specification.

I forgot to provide a follow up. The internal harness resolved the issue. The sensor was replaced during the rebuild but not the harness.

Thanks for the help, sorry it took me so long to provide feedback.
