Paint Code Question
1. I found the paint code on Sherwin Willams When I select the paint it gives me 4 choices
U7 -49667 ULTRA 7000
HB -57048 H-BASE
EB -57048 E-BASE
5B -49667 4TH DIMENSION B/C
The first is a formula number and the second is a quality, anyone work with these paints before and if so do you know what one I should get?
2. I currently have a base coat/clear coat on the vehicle in question. 99% of the clearcoat is intact the other 1% are chips. How do I properly prepare this for painting? Do I sand all the clearcoat down to the base coat on the entire car? Do I appli base coat and clear to the damaged area and then scuff everything with 600 grit and respray with base coat, then clear coat? I am completely new at this and would love some advice. Thank you in advance...
Jim
Number 1 rule. Clean before you sand.
1) Scrub (and I mean scrub, not wash) your vehicle using Dawn (or a similar brand) dishwashing soap. Don't be afraid to use a brush. You're going to a paint booth, not a car show.
2) Degrease your vehicle with a grease/wax remover. Spray it on and wipe it off with a paper towel. I degrease 3 times during a repaint and I figure about a gallon/paint job.
GeneStoner is 100% correct. The chips need to be sanded out or they will show. Attack them with 220 grit until they disappear. After the chips are gone, fill in the sanded area with 2K primer. allowing it to build higher than the original clearcoat. Then sand the built-up area until it is level with the original clearcoat.
The entire vehicle needs to be scratched prior to repainting it. 400 grit for a solid color. 600 for a metallic. With the pearl, I would probably go with the 600.
