Have been going through the mechanics on my 56 F100, and have reached the clutch refurbishment stage of the project. I have replaced the rear motor mounts, and taken the bell housing off to de-crud. While in there I plan to install a new clutch / pressure plate. In researching new ones, I thought I needed a 10" versus an 11". Platinum Driveline says I need the 10", Ft. Wayne Driveline says 11". When I removed my current clutch it measured 10 1/2" further confusing the situation. Could someone more knowledgeable than me offer some insight on what size I need or will work. Engine is a 272 V8. Thanks, Don
I believe a 56 F-100 (C) with the 272 and one of the stock transmission options would use an 11" clutch plate original part number 81T-7550 or B7C-7550-B. You can validate this with the original Ford documentation starting on printed page 441 (pdf page 465):
I have that trans in my '56 and it has an 11-inch clutch. As a side comment, I always had issues with shudder upon engagement no matter how careful I was with the installation. I went through a couple of years trying to sort it out until I landed on a local clutch rebuilder who supplied a diaphragm style cover. What a difference! Lighter pedal effort, smooth, linear and strong engagement. No modifications to the release bearing needed. Direct, plug and play.

I am fighting those kind of chattering issues. Can you tell me who supplied the diaphragm clutch for yours?
Many years ago I bought a diaphragm PP from NAPA, a 10" for some Y-block. Unfortunately the fingers are sized for the Y-block Cars, which use a smaller diameter input shaft. The fingers fouled the tube on the front bearing retainer (that the release bearing slides on) when fully depressed. The guys at Ft Wayne Clutch tell me there is no OEM diaphragm that will work with the Truck 1-3/8" input, but I have heard of others who have found one.
Try this contact. It has been 15 years or so since they supplied the parts though. He even built a disk that was kevlar on one side and conventional material on the other, the theory being that the differences in friction coefficients would smooth engagement. 15 years later, it still works great. I imagine the T/O or pilot bearing will fail before the clutch does.
Looking back, I guess should have documented the part number on the cover.....
