Hey guys bear with me, I recalling from what I saw friday. I pulled the timing set off of the 460 Friday and there is no key way, just two holes I believe in the cam gear. I looks as if the holes are in-line with a tooth. Is this a retarded set or straight up? Or do I need to check the crank gear? Also, after I took the alum. timing cover off, I noticed a cup bolted to the end of the cam with the hole located eccentrically, can somebody explain this to me? Also, after removing that piece, there is a 2 bolt thrust plate holding the cam in the block, these bolts are torqued down and I didn't have the proper size wrench, anybody know the size. Thanks guys for all your help.
The "cup" on the end of the cam is the fuel pump drive. Where the fuel pump comes through the timing cover, the arm off the fuel pump rides on this offset "cup".
The heads of the bolts on the cam thrust plate have 7/16" heads I think. If not they are 3/8".
There is no "key way" on the cam gear, just on the crank gear.
If the key way on the crank gear is in "direct alignment" with the gear tooth that has the timing mark, then its not retarded. If the tooth and mark are not directly in line with the key way then its retarded.
Thanks Dave,
when I unbolted the offset fuel pump cup, I didn't notice anyway to index it. I guess its fairly lightweight and won't affect the balance any, so it can just be bolted down in any posion(?) Again, thanks for the knowledge.
On the front of the cam there should be a pin that sticks out from the front of it, off set of the bolt hole in the middle. There are the two holes that are in the cam timing gear, the center one is where the bolt goes through the fuel pump eccentric cup then the cam timing gear and into the center of the cam. The pin on the front the cam goes through the hole in the cam gear that is offset from the center hole. That is the alignment pin for the cam gear, in effect the same as the key way on the crank gear.
