When it rains....
I woke up to the "Y" pipe clamp on my porch to finish off my fuel pump replacement episode(THANKS RiffRaff!) and slapped it on in RECORD Time! I got my flashlight ready to look for NO leaks and CLICK! Couple of cuss words later.. CLICK! CLICK CLICK! Can my starter go bad just like that after sitting 2 weeks? The batteries are in good shape. I smacked the starter w/BFH a few times and CLICK! ...jump at solenoid on fender well and CLICK! Could my starter be bad?...it's still new! Could it be in a 'dead spot' on the flywheel? I can't think of any other quick things or hacks w/o taking the starter off...any ideas?
Thanks!

That is a really good question...In fact, I'm not sure what that is. I remember hearing it before but I dunno. I took the starter off and tried to throw it over the fence but I was to hot, bothered and tired so I just yelled a few cuss words. I'm going to bring it back to the autoparts store tomorrow...I think it's under wartrenty. IF it still doesn't start I will really be beside myself.
Thanks for the reply...I was hoping for something easy that I may have overlooked but I believe it is the starter.
I will let you know how it turns out...the good...the bad...and the ugly.
Thanks!
Put a socket and breaker bar on the bolt that holds the damper on the crank on the front of the engine, and try to turn the engine over. You should be able to turn it with some effort, if you are not able to turn it over, then it may be hydro locked.
Hydrolock just means there's liquid inside the combustion chamber causing the piston to not go to TDC. If you removed injectors and didn't drain out the oil/fuel from the cylinders it's very likely it's hydrolocked. You can remove the glow plugs and purge the cylinders out that way, just make sure to put valve covers back on bolted with at least two bolts if you crank it with the starter because it shoots out very strong, or you can do it by using a cheater bar and a 15/16 socket to turn it over.
Sorry about the other thread...I tried to put a fork in it and started another one.
I only replaced the fuel pump and never opened up the valve covers and always had a towel in the holes. I'm picking up a new starter later this morning. if I still just get a HARD CLICK, I will try to turn it by hand with a 15/16 on a breaker.
Thanks for all the input! I haven't been in for a while but you all are still GOOD GUYS! I tell others over the years ...With out THIS exact forum, I would have sold my truck LONG AGO...TRUTH!
Thanks again!

After a new starter and no luck, I put a 15/16 on and spun it a couple of ratchets (as mentioned above)...I saw the pully spin with it....STILL hard CLICK! GRRRR! Any ideas?
hey guys I have 2012 450 power stroke that does not start correctly all the time new batterys and new started in stalled by dealer , the next step they wanted to replace wirein harness arround batterys and starter , at the tune of 1600 dollars , I dont think so they seem to think there wire break down happening with in my system , question is there a relay between the switch and the solinoid the problem is not consistant , you put key in and hurrily turn to start , is usually cranks over and starts you wait and let the gauges settle and thin turn to start it chatters and try to turn over and some times does , kinda act likes your turning the started switch back and forth quickly , you stop and then is just clicks , the next time , wait a bit or put jumper box on it it starts fine , any body have ideas

I'm starting to lose my puny little mind
Have you cleaned the terminals on the battery? Both the posts and the clamps on the cables need to be shinny clean.

BINGO! THAT is EXACTLY what it was! I feel like a chump! The terminals looked good and I had a SOLID "CLICK" while the dome light didn't dim when trying to start...classic starter symptoms for my non-mechanic self. I spent a lot of heart ache on this truck this past week...seems like old times except for the Ball-N-Chain isn't around to laugh and undermine me, lol...
Thank you all for the help! I'm going to need to find a new cable in the near future but it's running for now.
