I have a 2005 lariat f550. The stereo is a single cd and tape player with steering wheel controls. I did some searching but couldn’t find a thread with what I am looking for.
I am wanting to upgrade my factory stereo with one from a 2012 lariat with navigation. My question is will this swap work? Are the harnesses the same? Will it fit?
I am no audio expert but with the few things I have swapped from different years of truck I am pretty sure 05-2012 is way too far apart for it to be plug and play. And two completely different model years away also. I have been wanting to upgrade the stereo in my 2016 but the steering wheel controls seem to be the kicker. Seems very mixed results with them working and not.

I have a 2003 Excur with steering wheel radio volume UP/Down/Next/Mode. There are adapter units available to provide those inputs to the Pioneer I just installed. Got everything at Crutchfield. I'm not sure how the vehicle side is implemented, but the adapter unit plugs into the vehicle harness and creates a pulse train input for the Pioneer. The adapter unit gets a vehicle type specific download from the manufacturers website and works great in our Excur. Also, bought with the radio was an adapter plug that wires to the head unit and plugs into the vehicle harness.
Has anyone tried to put in an Amplifier?.. I also got some equipment from Crutchfield and now thinking I should have gotten the Amplifier too. It looks like the install can take sometime and more additional wiring. Anyone who got an Amplifier, is it a good idea if you like to play great tunes??
same problem but on a 2011 with gps. 6 cd player but only one works and quits when it gets hot. what can i plug and play without losing steering wheel options or anything else?
