OP, if this helps answer your question, I swapped motors between a 1993 4.9L auto with A/C and a 1988 4.9L manual no A/C. They had different fan shrouds, but were interchangeable. The 1993 had the full shroud and the 1988 had the “shroud” which only covered the top- more of a fan guard than a shroud. I opted to use the full shroud.
now I need to get a shroud just to feel included lol
I dunno, they definitely help with cooling. My F150 is pretty much just a 'run to the hardware store or take a load to the dump' truck, and after I replaced the radiator I didn't have any cooling issues without a shroud. Maybe I would have if I had AC? Anyway, it just didn't seem right without a shroud, and it was cheap enough, so I got one.

I meant because there exists a bigger shroud that would do a better job at the job its already doing great actually at this time. I am glad the plastic quality on the shrouds of this era is seeming to best out GM shrouds. mounting tabs? never hard of them lol
the underlying theme is I am jut like the guy who climbed everest first. "Why climb the highest mountain?" "because it is there"
