I can't tell you exactly where your fan should be in your stock shroud. However, to be efficient what you want is for the fan to be placed so that the air that is drawn through the radiator comes out at a 45 degree angle from the back side of the shroud. This placement will result in the fan being partially outside the shroud. The fan is never supposed to be completely enclosed within the shroud. Just use whatever extension is necessary to get the air flowing out at a 45 degree angle and that will produce the best results...

You need a 10 inch extension to get the fan within the shroud? That doesn't sound right. Are you using the fan from the 59 312 or the original 55 fan? Perhaps the thickness of the fan itself is coming into play. Is the engine still in the original location? The shroud should only be housing about 2/3 of the fan width...
Okay I just grabbed the fan shaft off my junker truck's 239 and it is almost 6"total from base to fan mount.
Sure looks longer than what's on the 312.
Cant wait to fit it up.
Good info from all - I would have expected the fan to be fully inside the shroud, now I know to target 1/2 -2/3 blade depth
