79 C4 trans odd issue

79 C4 trans odd issue
So i have a 79 F100 302/C4
It's currently got a slightly high idle so i am sure that could be some of it but I wanted to get more experienced opinions.
When i shift in reverse or into drive (but not from drive to 2 or 1) the trans make a weird almost electric motor type noise like it's engaging something it's hard to explain (I'll try and get a video later today) and it shifts with like a sorta lurch. Fluid reads full but atm the truck is nearly out of gas so I can't run it long enough to really warm it up proper. Now when driving it shifts fine though if i am honest i haven't gone much past 25 as I am still shaking down other stuff.
I know really nothing about auto trans but i do recall a vacuum modulator being mentioned?
