Hi everyone. During a quick drive to the gas station this afternoon my battery light came on when I started the truck after filling up. I go to pull out of the station and my power steering was gone. I was close to
home so I said let's keep going. Turn down my road and bam, my vacuum pump pulley flies out from under the truck. Get her home thank god and I see that the lower idler pulley is seized up. How would
that seizing make the vacuum pump pulley break off?
I've had something similar happen. For me it was the vacuum pump that seized: the case cracked and caused the shaft the pulley is pressed onto to sit at a slight angle. When the belt was no longer applying perfect perpendicular pressure to the pulley, its weld broke too (same way yours did) and almost flew off into the fan! I wonder if the idler's seize could have caused the same sort of situation? Vacuum pump pulley is definitely the weakest of the lot.
And just another side note, when you get a new vacuum pump pulley make sure it's a fully welded version. When I had this issue I went to Napa and bought the pump and pulley, the pulley was only tack welded in the center and that Chinesium POS part broke a week later! Other safety measure I took the second time was adding a nut on the end of the pulley shaft so if it ever breaks again it can't come flying off and damage anything else.
Thanks man. After going through it the idler wasn't seized but is was up against the tensioner so it was tough to turn. Got a new vacuum pump and going to change the tensioner to a Motorcraft to hopefully
remedy the idler from hitting it. Strange stuff.

Sounds like a Super duty idler was put on, not an OBS.
They are different sizes. The super duty one will smash up against the tensioner and hang up.
