Why is my early 99 such a DOG when towing in Elevation. At over 6000 feet I might as well get out and walk. I do have a cold air intake and I do run a DP Tuner that has been installed for over 10 years.. I was over 8000 feet this weekend and I wasn't even towing and I had to take the 10% grade in second gear.
Since your signature says you have gauges, how'd your boost and EGT numbers look? Was it a smoky dog, or just a dog? Leaks of either boost or exhaust (drive pressure) make little problems big problems up here.
I have a early 99 i understand they have a smaller turbo , Injectors, HPOP but has a upgraded Turbo wheel.. .I don't know what my fuel pressure was but that sounds like a new gauge to get. I found myself climbing the hill in drive but out of overdrive. I noticed my power dropping off. My boost gauge is pretty accurate but I can't tell you what it was at the time.. I waited too long to downshift into second which is when the black smoke came. I was not towing at the time but was in my 30HP towing tune. I could not climb out of second gear till I got to the top. .
I'll chime in here with the opinion that you don't have enough exhaust drive pressure to spool the turbo. If you have black smoke, you don't have enough air.
I have owned this truck since 2005 when it only had 26k on it. It has always wanted for power when towing in the 10K range. It just becomes a bigger problem when altitude is involved.
I watched some videos of Boost Leak Tests and I think I will look into that and see what I find.
