Elevation

Why is my early 99 such a DOG when towing in Elevation. At over 6000 feet I might as well get out and walk. I do have a cold air intake and I do run a DP Tuner that has been installed for over 10 years.. I was over 8000 feet this weekend and I wasn't even towing and I had to take the 10% grade in second gear.

What's your fuel pressure during all of this? First and foremost diesels gotta have fuel.

Since your signature says you have gauges, how'd your boost and EGT numbers look? Was it a smoky dog, or just a dog? Leaks of either boost or exhaust (drive pressure) make little problems big problems up here.

Expanding on the questions above and more toward the one Mark asked about boost. What turbo and/or compressor wheel do you have?

Drive pressure (exhaust) and boost pressure (CAC or intercooler) are very important in these scenarios

I have a early 99 i understand they have a smaller turbo , Injectors, HPOP but has a upgraded Turbo wheel.. .I don't know what my fuel pressure was but that sounds like a new gauge to get. I found myself climbing the hill in drive but out of overdrive. I noticed my power dropping off. My boost gauge is pretty accurate but I can't tell you what it was at the time.. I waited too long to downshift into second which is when the black smoke came. I was not towing at the time but was in my 30HP towing tune. I could not climb out of second gear till I got to the top. .

I think I was passed by a 1962 VW!

I agree with Mark. Time for boost and exhaust drive pressure leak tests.

Don't sweat the VW, light weight w/ a low squat stance and respectable grunt if kept in their power band. You'll get'em next time.

I'll chime in here with the opinion that you don't have enough exhaust drive pressure to spool the turbo. If you have black smoke, you don't have enough air.

I have owned this truck since 2005 when it only had 26k on it. It has always wanted for power when towing in the 10K range. It just becomes a bigger problem when altitude is involved.

I watched some videos of Boost Leak Tests and I think I will look into that and see what I find.

Sounds like a good plan. Git-r-done, you got a date with a Volkswagen.
