I was wondering if someone could tell me how many different kinds of air conditioners were availible for the 67-72 Ford pickups. Were they all add-on or did some come with AC from the factory? If anyone could post pics that would be great too. Or if anyone knows of a site that explains about them and has pics that would be awesome. I searched for awhile, but couldn't find anything.
Also, I just got a 1970 F100 that has AC that hangs under the dash. It starts by the steering column and goes about 3/4 of the way to the other side. Basically it is exactly centered under the dash. I'll try to take a pic soon. Its about 11 miles away from where I live. If anyone can tell me about it I would be greatful!
You probably have an after market unit. There seems to have been quite a variety of them available. I have two different ones and have seen 3 or 4 other styles that are made to fit the contour of the dash. My understanding is that Ford may have had as many as 4 different models during that time. They had the factory installed units and the dealer installed units. I know for sure that there were at least two different factory installed units during the 67-72 model years. Both of them are a monstrosity that replaces the heater too and consumes the glove box area and a good bit of the passenger compartment. Personally I like the compactness of the after market ones. You may want to check out 51stud's site. He may have some info on the nuances of the factory and dealer installed ones from year to year.
I just got my hands on a "factory" air unit for a 70 F-250 and like willowbilly3 says it eats up teh glove box and a lot under the dash. The big difference between the factory unit and other hang on a/c units is that the factory unit incorporates the heater like willowbilly3 said, but it also replaces the heater control assembly with a different set of controls. Other after market units, you control your heater through your dash control panel and the A/C through a different panel usually on the outlet panel.
The unit I have, although fairly wide, only has two outlets, pretty much in the center of the dash. Others I have seen have as many as four.
I'm going to be trying to install this thing so will try to post a "how's it going" message once in a while.
. If you want I will send you pictures of the two that I have. One of them was made in Ft.Worth. I also have a factory unit that I may put on ebey. I haven't done any selling since April and I am just trying to get up the energy to get back into it for the winter. I have collected quite a bit of stuff over the summer. Also I plan to liquidate most of my vintage woodworking tools. The east Texas humididty is just too hard on anything that you can't keep in the house.
I have a couple of pics of a dealer unit in my gallery. I have it installed in my "70 .(the truck is for sale on Ebay Wink! Wink!)It's the nicest one That I have found.I like it alot better than a factory unit. It goes all the way across the bottom of the dash, has 4 vents and realy don't take up any usable space.

My AC on my 72 F250, looks exactly like the picture in the previous post except for the rust ( My truck lives in the SW).
My AC has never leaked freon. Maybe in the last 25 years I have added a can but I can't remember it. It still produces very cold air. My blower moter makes noise. Don't know if it is the squirrel cage bearing or the motor itself. I need to replace one or both. Anyone recommend a good source?

Iv'e been working on a reinstall on a used dash unit close to the one thats posted. Well when , I got the unit hung under the dash
I thought hmm, I better test the motor and off and on switch ..
Oh god the bad noise that came from the blower fan. I pulled the motor out and found the set screw had come lose and the fan move down ond was hitting the housing, just moved it about 1/8 back and that fixed that noise. So this could be your troubles.

I would almosr bet that the motor is somewhat generic and if you had it in hand, any good parts store could provide you with one. You may have to do slight mods like cut off the shaft and wire it correctly. The only problem I have found is finding a 2 speed motor and had to replace a few of them with a single speed and wired in a reostat switch for speed control.
