I am just looking for some advice here but the situation is a 2006 F250 6.0L with 155K on it. The truck has been throwing occasionally a P0299 periodically, typically when it does it it's first thing when I start her cold and I don't give her a minute or 2 to warm up. I also get this screech (chalk board sound) when it first starts (cold) as well. I attributed the two to probably being the turbo vans going through the sweep and the unison ring/vans making the noises. As I said occasionally she would throw the code but never saw any performance change in the truck. I came home after golfing on Saturday which is about 20mile haul when it was 110 out. Truck ran great. I got close to home and it started becoming laggy, and by the time I got home she would barely get out of her own way. Got her parked, left her running, listened to her, I could her the turbo spinning, I rev'd her up. My boost gauge both in the dash and edge were 0. Again I could her the turbo so I knew she didn't freeze. She would drop to idle, stumble, recover, stupid laggy. It took 3 times before she finally threw a P0299 and I suspected the turbo probably had stuck vanes. Weird thing was I left her alone that night, started her back up Sunday, she ran great, no lag no nada. I took her to the shop, told them what's up, and now I am being told 2700 bucks to clean the turbo, (replace the unison ring and char) or 2100 bucks to install a new turbo that is on back order no ETA. I don't know if the pricing is realistic or I am being soaked. The turbo was replaced once at 35k, cleaned at 88K, and now 155 either clean or replace.
My question to the group:
Replace with the Stock Turbo again??? Is KC Turbo a good replacement? Truck is bone stock engine wise no mods. Advice?
Sorry for the story just trying to paint the picture and I apologize about the noob qs.
$2700 to clean the turbo??? That's ridiculous. Should be a 3-4hr job for a compentent mechanic, likely less. I'm no speed demon and I can remove and reinstall the turbo in about 2-hours.
Sounds like your vanes were stuck at full open. The clearances probably tightened up with the heat and once cooled down it broke free. I would remove the turbo and inspect/clean and you should be good. No need for a new turbo.
