2007 4.6 Still having a starting issue. Incredibly random. One moment it will fire right up the next moment it just clicks. I’ve replaced…..
Fuse box, all fuses
new PCM
new power fuel module
cleaned grounds
Throwing parts at it is not the answer . You need to use test lights, you can prewire a long test light wire to see where you are losing signal.
. Find out first if start relay sending 12vdc positive , if not the start relay is not picking up .
You can decide from there whether you have a failed starter or a failure to get start relay picked up. A test light is very visual , easier to see than a voltmeter . Use a lead from negative battery terminal for reference to test light ,that way you are not depending on a bad body ground . Of course if you are looking for a ground signal you can use positive battery terminal lead for reference to test light . If you are worried doing that you can put a small fuse holder right on battery pos terminal .
I've seen batteries that will charge and show correct voltages under light loads, but pop and seem to just be dead under higher loads like start loads because of a failing internal connection. I've seen even brand new off the shelf batteries fail under load. Likewise, I've had battery terminal clamps crack and be OK just to run a radio, but "POP" and just lay down under start loads. If you get it to Advance or other auto parts store, they'll test it free, under load and all.
For those of you saying it’s the starter I doubt that. The starter was replaced about 6,000 miles ago.
the starter does not act up/ take long to start it. As soon as it cranks it fires right up.
i found that when it will not start the wrench light will stay illuminated after the turning the key to run. Then sometimes the check engine light will flash as well.
if it will start the wrench light will go away and it fires right up. Keep in mind this is all with a 5 minute span I can get it to do both. Extremely random
The wrench light is just telling you you need an oil change most likely
It can also mean low boost pressure or several other things
You better test it for codes
I’ve tested for codes and it doesn’t have any. And even if it was for an oil change that shouldn’t effect it starting the engine. There’s obviously something else going on.
True story: "Once upon a time at a Ford dealer" we had a truck come in with a no start issue. Put starter #1 on it, same problem. Starter #2, same problem, 3rd time was literally the charm. That starter worked. Carburetors were worse. We would order them 3 at a time and send the one(s) back that didn't work.
Just because a part is new does not mean it's right or it won't break, in this line of work getting a bad part right out of the box is nothing unusual, even brand new Ford parts.
Double check all your grounds, Should be a couple grounds behind the front kick panels, under the hood etc... take them loose, clean them good on both sides and remove any paint between the wire/bolt/sheet metal.
You just need to see if start signal going down to starter solenoid when it fails . Wire in a test light , bar loose connection on starter that would mean starter solenoid intermittent . It was probably a reman starter anyway , we know how little they do on reman stuff . Like the man says new doesn't mean good . But as far as the start circuit goes there is other stuff that could be intermittent that can be found with your own homemade soldered test light looking for loss of signal during failure . One is your shift interlock under truck .
Since you added it shutting off while driving that would mean to me a loss of dc power to your fuse box /pcm feed . Inspect your main leads /they can corrode inside insulation . Also your grounds by fuse box are highly subject to rust -common problem -relocate .
You can do a voltage drop test on leads . A battery test maybe in order .
