Lets face it, most of us with our 4x4s are always looking to make a good thing better. I thought it might be cool to start a thread about one thing we've done to our 4x4 lately that we thought was a pretty good value for the dollar and a good mod. Might give the rest of us an idea of what we want to do next. Could be an engine mod, a type of locker, a new suspension mod, whatever. I'll start with an oddball engine mod I just did: Moroso crankcase evac system.
I mean, we all want less sludge build up and better ring seal right? That means a pcv setup to create negative crankcase pressure BUT that also means a resulting contaminated intake charge (bad), a warmer charge (bad), and it leans it out a little (bad). This is why you see many racers running just breathers. Solution? The Aforementioned Moroso kit...less than twenty bucks at Summit. All you've gotta do is weld in the supplied bung to your header collector, screw on the one way valve, connect that up with vacuum hose to the supplied breathers onto your valve covers, and your good to go. Negative crankcase pressure, better ring seal, cleaner oil, with no intake charge contamination. Pretty slick!
Don't try this if you've gotta deq that sucker though
I recently added a Power Steering cooler to help my box when my front locker binds and it gets hard to turn.......well, when I added new lines I tightened the hose clamp too much and it snapped the nipple off of the PS fluid resevoir (plastic POS). Anyway, the stock replacement was $70!!!! So I found this one on the internet:
I had to do a little fab work to get it to fit, but this thing is top notch! Made from aluminum so it helps dissipate heat as well! And it only cost $25!
i just finished trying out my new milemarker E9000 winch, pulled my dad's jeep several times from the river, and myself a few times when i got a little happy with the throttle, and once when i tried to get it really stuck and ended up almost having the winch under water. everytime pulled out without any problems. for 460 bucks, it definatly paid for itself. i highly recommend this winch.
proeliator, could you explain a little more on what is needed for that mod? what do you mean "Don't try this if you've gotta deq that sucker though" whats deq? thanks
Great guys, keep them coming! Heck, I'm gonna check out that resovoir at that price. Tex, I don't recall what DEQ stands for (dept. of environmental quality?) but its when those who have the 1975 and up vehicles have to have their rigs emission tested. I would think that the evac mod might screw you if you had to pass emissions tests. Its probably for that reason a disclaimer on the Moroso package says "for drag race use only". Anyways, to be specific you need to drill a hole in your header collector, weld in the supplied bung, hook up the one way valve and connect that via vacuum hose to the valve cover caps. Its a simple mod if you know how to weld...thats why I thought it was so cool. I've always run breathers to beat the intake charge heat/contamination but this is a great way to do that and get the benefits of neg. crankcase pressure.

it's now been reduced, with shipping its probably 440 bucks now
from what i have heard from the off-road shops around here is that they are built pretty good, the reason they are cheap is because they are trying to enter the market with Warn and thats tough to do, so they are trying to make a name for themselves. but we will see... so far i love it.
yea.......I don't know much about the mm electric winches but they've held military contracts for awhile and their hydraulic winches are proven solid. The company is reputable enough that I'd think their elec winches are a good investment too.
I haven't purchased them yet but I have been looking into a set of "Revolver" shackles from Teraflex. They're a double hinged shackle for leaf spring applications. When you drive into a ditch or deep rut on an angle they open up and allow your axle to drop up to 10 more inches on rear applications and 9 on the front. Imagine an F150 with 35 inches of travel on pretty much stock suspension, I love it! They run around 190 bones a pair, from Teraflex. The best mod I have installed on my truck so far has got to be the Powertrax No-Slip locker. I used to get stuck in the mud all the time because of those stinkin open differentials! Now I just stick it in granny gear and crawl through everything! It's like a totally different truck. I have a few engine mods I am waiting to install: 2bbl conversion and EFI manifolds, we'll see how that goes!
hmm I've got 2 latest mods. Not sure which is best. I upgraded my Front Axles for a set of there D44 axles, So far they have held u-joint far better then the stockers and haven't broke YET. The other swapping my 33-12.50 A/T's for a set of 35-14.50 TSL boggers. Now if I'm riding with a friend with just TSL's or a everyday M/T they seem like A/T's compaired to my boggers.
But I've got a wish list a mile long, Which I'm sure most everyone else here does too
One of the best mods I've done is spooling the rear on the old 1/2 ton setup. It only cost me like $50 including lube and that truck would crawl over everything! Talk aout reliable traction, that truck had it. Unfortunately, The recent 3/4 ton highboy conversion has left me w/ a pos Limited slip. There's just no cheap way to spool a Dana 60 . I know I could weld it up but the limited slip carrier is weaker and I'd be worried about it shattering. Compared to the old spool this LS is a joke.
