I just ordered an off road kit for my hi lift jack and a steering stabilizer kit for my 84 F150! You guys mentioning home made mods reminds me. I designed and built a roof mounted light bar for the 84 when I was in high school. I built it out of 1 inch box tubing and 1/8 inch steel plate, it turned out really nice. Now I have five 100 watt off road lights and my CB antennas mounted up there.
I've got another that really kicks ***.......a while ago I made a hand throttle out of a bike shifter and rear deraileur cable. Great for those times when you wish you had three feet (stopped and on a steep incline).

I was thinking of doing that also! Would I also be able to use it as a cruise control? How fast will it go up to?

I use it as a cheap cruise control on the highway, yes. However it is not the same as a contentional cc.......it keeps the throttle at the same position.......not the same speed. How fast it goes depends on how tight you set the cable.
Here is a write-up that I found on another guy's jeep site.......this is pretty much exactly what I did. Make sure to use a non-indexing shifter and a LONG shifter cable.
I'm with red_rocket. My best O/R performance mod was the mini-spool. Second was removing my 33x12.5x15 Bahas and putting on 35x12.5x15 BFG/MT (also my favorite "I did it myself" mod since all I used was 2 pry bars and a 12v emergency air compressor)
Coolest mod (IMO) was the homemade tilting front clip.
Favorite "rig job" mod was the homemade dual exhaust sustem.
Smartest mod was simply running all axle/dif breathers into the cab.
Hey, just wanted to say I put the pics of the hitch in my gallery. I built it to slide in my framerails, keeping it as high as possible, as well as subtle. The side plates are 1/4" plate that the cross tube sits inside. Enjoy! Ted

The only difference on mine is that I used a cable clamp to hold my wire to the throttle.
That is exactly what I was thinking! So you can run 70+ mph with that? I have a 1000 mile road trip ahead of me next month, I would like to have cruise control. I think it would also be nice for keeping the truck running if it decides to get stubborn on cold mornings.
i know, it was maintenance, but OMG what a difference!
i know do not worry about my steering at all, i used to worry when potholes approached (~1/2 turn of play in wheel)
second fave... mfg mud t/a's
third (or is it first fave?) tack welding the bearing cups to the axles! ah, no mo thrown cups! (new axles, and u joints, still threw three cups?) that one has saved me a ton of time.
