So long, 40k F150 lightning, we hardly knew ye

https://www.thedrive.com/news/2023-f...ce-specs-trims

The Ford F-150 Lightning no longer starts just above $40,000 as the Blue Oval automaker announced Tuesday morning. Citing "significant material cost increases and other factors," Ford is raising the truck's base MSRP to $48,769 including destination. This is the first price hike since the electric pickup was revealed in May 2021. What's more, order banks are re-opening this Thursday, with news that this updated pricing structure will take effect at that time.

Here's the full pricing list, including destination fees:
  • Pro: $48,769
  • XLT: $61,269
  • XLT High: $70,269
  • XLT High / Extended Range: $82,769
  • Lariat: $76,269
  • Lariat Extended Range: $87,769
  • Platinum Extended Range: $98,669

Can't help but wonder if they were losing money. Anyways 61k for a XLT doesn't seem right.

I hope reservations conversions drop to nothing and Ford gets burned. Sorry.
We get roped in.
We get promises of an affordable EV truck,
We salivate.
We reserve.
We wait.
We get no info.
We wait.
We hang on to a $100 reservation.
We have no idea what, where, or how we’ll get in line.
We dream our builds. Colors. See affordability.
We are told we’ll have to wait longer.
We hang on.
We have absolutely no idea when we will be picked.
We swallow prices upon release. Gulp. They are more than promised.
We haven’t even seen one on the road, and our build color is already gone.
We still have no idea if we will se one in 2022, 3023, or 2024.
Now, we see prices jump, and any hope of owning the affordable Ford EV truck is destroyed.
All this, with no range worth discussing.
All this hope and excitement. Shattered.

Ford and I have come to the cross roads of 100% loyalty. Prices are going up everywhere but Ford has really jacked up some things over the past couple of years....most notably, the lightning, the Bronco, Maverick and once announced, even the Ranger was slow to come.

I'm sorry guys but I have to agree with Smokewagun, I hope people stop buying anything from all car makers and let them figure it out.

NOBODY saw that coming...........

except for everybody who has said there'll never be $40k F-150 Lightnings on the roads.

Glad I cancelled my Silverado EV reservation. Same will happen with it. I decided to pick up a new ICE truck instead (not GM). Even at 15 MPG it'll be WAY less cost than an EV truck.

Y'all act like the cost of a vehicle going up is something new lol. Sure it's disappointing but is completely expected. Are they pricing these trucks out of the general publics reach? 1st world problem.

For me 40 grand might have been something to consider, 50 grand nope. Just too many dollars for transportation. I am sure others will have the same thinking. Maybe not many, but others.
Costs goes up on everything.I retired and now my miles per year has been cut more than half.so I thought I would look into EV. Less miles I could charge it over night.
40 grand was a high starting price for transportation, 50 grand makes the starting point too high.
By starting point, I mean.
In Oct 2017 I bought this 2018 F-150. Four years ten months ago.I'll say five years.
In those 5 years, $1500 , bed cover, floor mats, mud flaps. New set Michelin's $1020, new battery $208.
Over 81,000 miles driven, over $9500 in gas.
In those five years this transportation has costs me just less than $42,000.

I agree with the consensus...all of my value considerations were based on the 2022 MY pricing. I don't condemn Ford for the increases; commodity prices have spiked in a huge way since the truck was introduced. Just like Tesla, if you churn out vehicles at a loss, you will soon find yourself in bankruptcy proceedings.

But, just like that Model Y I nearly bought, if the value no longer exists for my plans, I'll take my money elsewhere. I'm gonna hold my reservation because there's no reason for me to cancel right now, but if nothing changes by the time my number comes up, I don't see going through with an order. I like my current car, and my old Expy gets the job done just fine. It rolled 2,500 miles over the last year due to gas prices, only moving when it was pulling something. But it meets my needs and costs me virtually nothing to own...which isn't something I can say about that extended range Lightning.

So because Ford jacked up the price of their truck, you automatically know for a fact GM will do the same? Care to share the next winning lottery numbers?

Good luck with the new Nissan.

That's part of why I kept my reservations for all of them. I currently have deposits down for the Lightning, Rivian, Silverado EV, Lyriq, and Blazer. Rivian honored prices with reservation holders who put their money down before the prices went up, so it's reasonable to suggest others may do the same if prices go up. It's also possible that my reservation will be worth something to someone else if I decide to back out of any of them.

I see zero upside to pulling my reservation. Decision time is when my number comes up for any of them, and not a moment sooner.

Is it a coincidence that this price hike is at the same time that the new bill before congress allows for a 7500 dollar rebate on EVs?

I doubt it, Ford hasn't hit it's limit yet for that to be of any consequence. It's most likely exactly what they say it is, inflation mostly due in part to the damned covid and the war in Ukraine has international strains placed on every aspect of life as we know it.

Everything costs more as a direct result.

Good call. I’m sure this has nothing to do with it.

those of us who figured it out that the 40k lightning was just ford’s version of the mythical 35k Tesla model 3 were ridiculed by certain people (some very active in this thread) for being pessimistic and not “with it”. They pointed to a few “average Joe” types (conveniently featured prominently in industry media so we can all read about it ) who got one as proof that they are out there, but someshow I’ve never seen one, not even one lightning of any price, in my metro area where Teslas are as common as Toyota RAV4’s.

now they are changing their tunes and dismissing it as “oh well prices go up, big deal”, as if a 17.5% increase between model year is just business as usual. Makes one wonder.

The standard-range $35K Model 3 certainly existed, and I almost bought one. There were lots of folks on the Tesla forum with them when I was active from 2019-2020. It was always an “off-menu” thing that was sold over the phone with customer service, but any model 3 SR+ could have been sold for that price if the purchaser agreed to the downgrade. It was all software limited.
