I'm not sure what kind of pressure it would take, I have a good pressure washer but it wouldn't touch this stuff it's more like died glue.
Hot tanks are almost a thing of the past, I only know of a couple in the state but it's worth a call.to see. maybe today they use a different solution because of environmental regulations. or maybe because so many parts are aluminum on modern engines. never thought about that.
Th machine shop I use uses an ultrasonic media cleaner but it leaves a little to be desired. I don't think it would do this job.
Water, heat and soak time are always a good part of any heavy duty cleaning operation. With aluminum wheels, one has to be wary of chemicals that will degrade protective clear coats and corrode the metal. This is why there are chemicals that are specific to cleaning aluminum. Once the crud is loosened, a pressure washer with plain water may be the best coup de gras to that crud or the rinse in "rinse and repeat."
Super clean and simple green had no effect whatsoever even after repeated soaking.
I guess I'll see about hot tanking and if that's not as option it's boiling or get the power tools out. I do think I'll make a tub out of a barrel and put a weed burner under it with a detergent solution. be easy and who knows it might work.
Found something called KRUD KUTTER. Seems to work pretty well. Going to try it in my 5 gal air driven carb cleaner tank. Non toxic and Bio- degradable. Let you know if I can remember to. getting old ( 81).
Given all the tactics that have failed thus far we might be up against something other than the usual suspects (grease, brake dust, brake fluid, petroleum products etc.). So might it be possible to use something like a razor blade to scrape up a sample? How thick is it? Is it uniform in color and consistency? Is it soft and pliable or hard and brittle (cracks)? Does that scraped sample dissolve in anything you have access to?
The old oil and grease it caked on thick on my truck due to #5 pushing oil out of the breather for years.
The previous owner bought a junk 390 out of a junk yard and ran it for several years.
I've wasted several cans of different degreaser with no good results.
I'm thinking of trying soaking it with penetrating oil and see what happens.
Lye is by far the best degreaser I've used, but will eat aluminum in a short time and is also dangerous. Having dealt with a similar struggle, I went out and found a hot water pressure washer. 200 F water at 2000 psi, not a silver bullet, but as close as I've found.
I tried gas, paint thinner, paint remover you name it gave up. got my power brushes and buffers out and went to work. took me all afternoon to do one wheel and get the coves painted but it basically looks new.
Sometimes there just isn't an easy way and I think this is one of them.
