5.0l timing

I have a 92 5.0l marine engine in my truck.
I am having a strange issue with it. I converted the ignition to the ford duraspark II. The issue i am having is the timing keeps readjusting its self back to 0tdc. The first time i thought i didn't tighten the dizzy enough but this has happened 4 times in the last 8 months. Has anybody had this problem before?

Sheared roll pin on the distributor gear is my first suspicion.

Might be, I will have to check that out.
just seems strange that it will run fine for a month or so before it does it again. I would think a sheared pin would move before that length of time

Some of those gears are pesssed on in really tight tolerence, and the way roll pin sheared could aid in makint it hard to move, until warmed up.

If the gear is not turning on the shaft, that leaves housing movement. Since you added the distributor it is possible that you have an endplay problem. I recently bought a new Cardone distributor that had this problem. The distributor housing did not seat fully due to the bushing on the shaft between the cam gear and the housing being too thick. I had to mill .022" off of it.

To see if you are having the same issue, hold the housing with your hand tight to the block (cam gear installed, of course) and see if you can pull up on the shaft. It should have up and down play. .017" is considered ideal.

When mine had no play, I measured the gap between the flange on the distributor housing and the block. I could slip a .010" feeler gauge in the gap. I noticed during the initial install that the hold down clamp did not have a solid "feel" as it was tightened. This is what led me to check the endplay. Something I should have checked from the outset.

To complete the endplay measurement, hold the shaft down tight to the block and see if you can pull up on the housing. Ideally, this too should have .017" play for .034" total. IMO, play is play. If you have play with both shaft and housing, you're okay.
