Here is what I have. 1997 f150 base model 2wd Trans. code U A4r70w Axle code19 3:55
My trans shifts fine cruise control works Through my research some say it is the vss and others say it could be a gear at the end of the speedometer cable at the trans. I don't know what this trans. uses. Would like to hear from a few of you what it could be. I will not get to look under the truck until Mon.
Thanks

Update After looking at the print in my service manual best I can tell there is no speedometer cable. It does have 2 speed sensors one on the trans. tail shaft and one on top of the diff. The VSS on the trans sends a AC signal to the pcm and it controls fuel injection and ignition timing. Now all this is working so I'm thinking I may need the one on the diff. What I have not been able to figure out is how to test the diff. sensor when I remove it. First I will check and clean the connections. Does this sensor count the teeth on the ring gear? Is it some sort of proxcemity sw.? It looks like these two inputs send a signal to the pcm then it send a output to the speedometer? Does anyone know if this is how it works cause I'm just winging it.
Thanks for any help.

Fixed The vss is on the trans. tail housing (2wd) the one on the diff has nothing to do with the speedometer it is called the dss (diff speed sensor). Best I can tell it is for the cruise control. ( this is a 2wabs truck) The first thing the flow chart ask is does the speedometer and the odometer not work if yes check the vss it should read 200-500 ohms if not replace. That fixed it mine was open. If just the speedometer then check plug connector on the back of the speedometer glad it was not that.
