Question Odd "catch" when accelerating

Just bought this 2003 F250 Lariat last month. It has an odd "catch" (not sure how else to describe it) when accelerating. I've been playing with it, trying to narrow down what it could be.
Issue Description:
When I take off from a complete stop the engine starts to throttle up, the truck begins to move then there's a "thunk" or "catch". When accelerating from a momentary stop (i.e. pull up to a stop sign, come to a complete stop, then pull out) it doesn't do it. You have to stop for at least 10 seconds or more.
I've tried loading the drive train to see if it eliminates the "catch" (step on the brake, give it some throttle, then release the brake). The idea being that if it's u-joint, differential, or something in the transmission that's worn out, loading it should eliminate the "catch". It still did it when I started moving. It does it regardless of 4x4 engagement, regardless of gear I'm in (I've tried starting from 1st, 2nd, and 3rd), and only in forward movement, not reverse.
Thoughts?
EDIT: I've also gone through the drive shafts and front axle u-joints with a pry bar and everything looks tight.

Have you tried greasing the splines on the slip joint?

Slip joint regreasing

I'm assuming the feel is coming from drivetrain and not engine?

Yeah, it definitely feels like the drivetrain, not the engine. I have not tried greasing the slip joint. I'll look at that this weekend. Wouldn't preloading the drivetrain stop that clunk though?

Have you inspected the brakes for binding and read that pads can have movement causing a clunking sound.. I would start there if this hasn't been done.

Nailed it! Greased the splines and the clunk is gone. That hydrostatic pressure trying to put the splines back was a bit much. Nothing the old dead blow couldn't fix.
