I would like to find a 1 wire internally regulated alternator for my 67 F100 with a 390. Has anyone upgraded to this and have a suggestion where I might find one for an easy bolt on? I would like to find a rebuilt unit; but new if I have to. I have the American Autowire complete new wiring for the truck.
I bet there are 100 posts about this and 100 posts about why NOT to use a 1-wire type setup. I did this back about 3 years ago and it works great. Not many used out there but any good alternator shop could get you a rebuilt one if needed.

Thanks for the reply. I think it should be fine as the American Wire set up is designed for it. No old wiring in truck.
I don’t necessarily think they are a bad thing, but I too prefer the normal internally regulated alternators over the one wire style.
I think the most common objection to the one wire is that you have to rev the engine up initially to start a self exciting alternator’s charging cycle.
This is really only a pain when that particular alternator is one that needs to go to a higher RPM than others really. For most 1-wire applications there are millions of users who hardly even noticed that aspect.
I still think sensing the battery charge directly from the battery is a technically better method, where the 1-wire senses it internal to the alternator based on the info it’s receiving on the charge wire.
If I have that description technically correct that is.
I believe that the manufacturers have long since gone past that design and gone sort of back to a type that senses the battery.
However it’s all computer controlled for many and various reasons, so it may have had more to do with control than any lack of effectiveness.
We actually sell a Ford 3G model with a self exciting regulator to make it a 1-wire install.
This isn’t for charging performance at all, but instead it is all about simplifying the conversion for those who try to avoid wiring jobs at all costs.
The AAW harness may not come with the wiring to support a standard install, but it’s such a simple part of the wiring harness that the few wires needed can easily be added to run even an externally regulated alternator.
Even easier to work with a standard internally regulated model.
