Got it dusty this weekend.

Took my, new to me, 17’ out on the local OHV trails (fire roads mostly, nothing crazy) this weekend. First time running through all the gears. I know these aren’t necessarily off-road trucks but, I was VERY pleased with how capable my stock truck did this weekend. Point it and go! My only issue was width- it’s too fat to keep up with the Wrangler’s and Tacoma’s that were also out. We were the only full-size that I saw.

And no pictures? How bad were these fire roads that made you so impressed with the truck?

Kicking myself… got caught up in the moment and no pics to share. So, we did Drinkwater Flats in SoCal (closest to us), it’s pretty hairy in the beginning: rutted, loss gravel, steep and narrow AF. We’re very much in the suburbs. IDK, I haven’t been wheelin’ in years, since I sold my CJ5 (also stock) seven years ago. The natural ground clearance, the lack of effort- most of the time I was able to just let the 4.30s do their thing, foot off the gas and it just crawled up. Comfort- it was 98 degrees yesterday, had the air blowin’ none of the gauges even moved. Granted, it’s not Moab. But it was a nice day out with the confidence that it could go ANYWHERE that it could fit.

You use the rear locker at all? If so any noticeable difference or was the terrain not that demanding? Thx

We did, for me it all felt seamless. But, for this particular trail there’s not much lead up. There is a staging area were we aired down the tires and did the manual front hubs.

remove your front sway bar next time, itll be much smoother.

locker is a blast, but all that torque, you tend to chew the tires up quickly

Lucky. Up here near the Bay Area there is no OHV or unpaved roads accessible to regular working stiffs. and the few nearby like Carnegie you have to pay to get in and then it’s just a few dirt roads and a “playground”. I used to be near Oceanside and it was off road heaven just inland a bit.

Hollister Hills too far? Never had any interest in wheeling the SD there, plenty of fun in the yota's though. I'm sure there are areas on the ranch that can offer a challenge with little to no threat of paint/body damage. Gotta pay, but it's only $5.
Never been to Carnegie so I don't know how it compares.

It’s about 95 miles from where I live. That’s like 100 dollars in gas just to get there and back. Lol.

we have been preparing for a move to a freer state anyway, the annual registration on my basic 250 4x4 is about 800 dollars and I don’t exactly make FAANG money .

carnegie is also only 5 dollars though more catered toward dirt bikes and quads. There are a few fire roads that you can drive with an Escape, and a “playground” with some logs, a “mug pit” and a short staircase

Sounds like fun. I was hoping to get to Utah this year and try the truck out in the off road areas, but no luck. I did get it into the sand at the beaches of the OBX last year and was quite pleased with how well it did. Best I can tell, it is pretty hard to stick a Jeep in the sand but the big trucks can get stuck. Thankfully I never got stuck or even came close. When going all the way north on the OBX, there is about 12 miles of beach to the border of VA. On the way up you drive the hard packed sand in the tide line which is easy. On the way back, you turn in toward the deep and soft sand and there was a shelf built up from the tide I had to climb. I turned on the locker for that and hit the go pedal to build momentum and got right up and over it. I will say, I see why the Sand and Snow mode are the same mode. Driving in deep sand is just like driving in deep snow. Your truck will want to drop into the ruts and follow them and it is hard to get up out of the ruts. Also, that mode makes the throttle response instant and makes it feel like you gained 100 HP over normal or ECO mode.
