Swapping a ZF5 in my 97. Pulled trans out of donor and after pressure washing I found some cracks. First I thought it was casting lines but nope. I can’t see it from underside of bell housing so don’t appear clear thru. Yet.
I can Tig aluminium decent, but that’s a chunk but with preheat and 250 amp machine I could probably do a little good. Or just call Midwest trans or some other rebuilder and get a rebuilt unit and maybe try and upgrade to a s-47?
The 1356 Tcase has some internal trauma and leaked rusty water not ATF = WTF. Not to bummed on thst as I was going to swap to 4407 since this is 4wd conversion and I need to build driveshafts.
The bell housing crack doesn’t bother me because you can get to both sides. The crack going up to the shift tower is concerning. I would find a local transmission rebuilder and ask who they use to weld cases.
My brothers truck had some cracks in the bellhousing and their repair has done well for several years, but the case itself was not cracked.
