PS whine from nowhere

Went camping and after sitting a couple days the PS pump was making noise while turning, sometimes.
Doesn't seem affected by brakes, and neither loose assist.

I put a new motorcraft pump on about 25k ago, and a Redtop gearbox about 15k ago. Both had been working great until now.
I also replaced the tensioner about 12k ago, don't recall the age of the belt.

I checked the PS reservoir and thought it was low so I added about a half a cup. (not running)
When I went to replace the cap it was overfull, so I removed about a half a cup. Ironically, the noise didn't change.

The whine is not nearly as loud as it was when I replaced the pump and didn't get it fully bled.

I think I'll try spraying the belt with water while it's making the noise... maybe I just need a belt?

Thanks for any advice!

Mine quit whining when I flushed and switched to Mobil-1 synthetic fluid. Still whine free at 182K

I don't remember it being foamy/aerated.

Mine was flushed when I put on the gearbox and is still clean, but I don't know that it's synthetic.

It's been a while since I did mine, but I also noticed quite a bit of steering effort was reduced as well. Maybe it's time for round 2 again.

I first did mine in 2009 then again a few years later. I have not put on a lot of miles since then, probably 30K or so. I only did the second flush because I forgot to cover the vent hole on the cap when I steam cleaned the engine, not because I was having any issues.

Any new leaks in the area? If the seal between the reservoir and pump gets even the tiniest suction leak you'll start getting a whine.

Drove it again for the first time today, noticed that if I depress the brake the whine diminishes/goes away depending upon how much effort the PS is subjected too.
I assume this is pointing to the hydroboost or some valve in the system.

Anyone have any insight? I'm not very good at diagnosing hydroboosts beyond leaks.

About all I could say is test it out when the engine is off. You're good for one or two strokes of the brake pedal, then the reserve is gone. If you shut it off and the brake boost goes away immediately, it's failed internally and needs to be replaced.
