I have a 2017 F-350 SRW that I have owned since new. It has about 70K miles on it... We are on an extended trip with our RV currently sitting in the North Georgia mountains. We have put about 2500 miles on the truck since we left Texas a few weeks ago. I have noticed about a week ago that when I go to apply the brakes, I get squeal from the rear. The truck stops just fine. When the squeal happens, I can left off the brake and re-apply and it goes away generally. It doesn't happen until the truck / brakes get hot.
Yesterday as we were driving around (no trailer - just the truck), I noticed a squeal / dragging sound from the rear of the truck at low speeds (less than 20 MPH) even when the brake is NOT applied. As I apply the brake the sound changes but doesn't go away. This morning I drove over to a local repair shop. The squeal was not there - no issues. We pulled both rear tires, put the truck in neutral and spun the rear hubs. No squeal. The pads are worn but not worn out. The rotor looks pretty good but again - not worn out. Any ideas what is going on when the brakes/truck gets hot and I hear this noise?
Check the parking brake shoes. I assume these still have those inside the rear hubs. Maybe a small rock lodged in the caliper?
Yes, parking brake is inside the rear hub/rotor. If you take the rotor off wire brush/clean and lube everything associated with the parking brake I bet your noise will go away. It gets dirty back there and tends to rust, gunk and stick the mechanisms. The rotor is usually hard to get off and best done using bolts to force it off (a bolt trick). Nothing to be worried about, just do it when you can.
Take it out for a drive. Then check which rim is hot, that will tell you what side to start on.
I would vote a calipers hanging up. There’s not much padding on parking brake if it’s that it probably all gone anyway and will not cause an issue and can wait till you are back home.
A caliper should be checked fairly quickly as it could lock up and park you somewhere inconvenient so best if you can choose the parking spot.
