Hi news to the forum, just bought myself a 1969 with a 1977 351W. Gaskets were completely the wrong ones so I pulled the carb off and while it was off cleaned and rebuilt the 2100 carb. I get a terrible hissing noise now and cannot get the truck to idle for longer than 30 seconds. There’s only 1 vacuum line of the carb (coming from back of intake) any thoughts what could be going on.
Seems like the most likely scenario is a mismatched gasket again.
This time one of the ones at the base of the carb either between the manifold in the carb, or a spacer if you have one of those.
I don’t remember any vacuum hoses tied between the intake manifold and the carburetor so you need to check that one out.
Maybe a picture to show us what it is and we might be able to figure out if it’s correct or not.
That engine should have an EGR plate under the carb. Is it still there? If so, the vacuum leak could be under the plate. If the plate has been removed or replaced with a plain spacer, there could be gasket problems due to the mismatched parts.

While it's idling for the 30 seconds, spray WD40 around the base of the carb. If rpms rising, then you'll have found your vacuum leak.
