Sounds like a simple process but I failed twice yesterday. I'm working on an OBS ball joint D60. Installing seal assembly #710414.
Any tips/tricks to installing one of these spindle seals. The black composite is brittle and I managed to crack 2 of them yesterday. Even the second one I was super careful and it cracked as it fully seated.
The plastic is not really part of the sealing process so I would not worry about cracking it. I always put this type on with a simple ball-peen hammer and just hit it evenly all around the outside, but I am betting you already tried that.
Yes, I used a hammer and tapped them in (with a seal installation tool).
The first one cracked badly and a chunk of the plastic separated/fell off (I removed the remaining plastic and only the seal assembly remains). The second one cracked but stayed in tact.
I assume the first one needs replaced, it looks like the plastic rides on the rubber axle seal, keeping junk out from between the axle seal and the spindle seal. Right now there is a gap between the axle seal and the spindle seal where the plastic used to be.
I'll lower my expectation for a "crack free" installation and just replace the one that is FUBAR.
