I took delivery of my truck this morning. It's all original with no body rust and has the perfect patina. I plan to leave it as-is but do want to clean things up. Mechanically it has been gone over and is a great driver. I mostly just want to clean things up. I'll use this thread to document my learning and progress.
To start, the speedometer glass had lots of black tar like stuff smeared on the inside of the glass. I removed the dash panel and removed the speedometer surround to get to the glass. It was easy to clean the glass but now for reassembly, was there a gasket for the glass or was it sealed in with this tar like stuff? It seems that there are remnants of a gasket.
Which leads me to a basic question - I have the Ford 1964-1972 parts manual (PDF) and the 1965 shop manual (book and pdf) - but I don't seem to see assembly drawings to find parts for things like this. Am I missing them, looking in the wrong place or do they not exist?
For example, I also need the 2 little rubber bumpers for the ash tray and I'd like to replace the ventilator hoses since they are filled with mud dauber (long gone) nests but can't find the parts since I don't know the number to search.
The CD I got from HiPo Parts has 2 PDF files on the disk. One is the Text which sounds like you have and one is the Illustrations that sounds like you don't have. It's much easier if you have both PDFs. There was a gasket base number 10856 around the speedo glass but it was not serviced * meaning you had to improvise.
For the heat duct tubes I've used GM tubing before and removed the upper and lower holders from my originals and transplanted to some tubing like this. I'm not sure if the 2 3/4" is correct diameter at the moment but I remember it was mid-eighties Cadillacs that used this stuff.
i removed the instrument panel and cleaned the speedometer face with a soft brush and cleaned the glass and bulbs. They were realy dirty. Looks much better now.
e photos tonight.
Looks awesome!! Love the patina and the rims! Looks like my trucks older brother. Yes, I get that black goo around the speedo also, when it gets super hot outside.

Oh, there's no brown just rust and I love it! I used to pretty all my rigs up, then I bought this and my 79 F250 4x4, both patina'd and haven't ever looked back, my 63 F250 4x is looking the same and all he's gonna get is a green 3m scratch pad scrub and be driven, it's like wrinkles and gray hair (well for men at least) I embrace it as character and wisdom!!
I'd like to make a wood bed "liner" that simply sits on top of the bed with the minimal points of contact to help promote air flow and moisture retention. I have a woodworking shop and experience. This is primarily decorative and haunting light items - not loading the bed with logs like @Pickupmanx2 photo above! However, all of my searches turn up wood "beds" that are held down with metal strips and screwed into the bed frame. I simply want something that sits on top of the existing metal bed. Is there a name for this or any links folks have come across? I've googled until I'm blue in the fingers and nada.
Thanks @TA455HO - I missed that thread even with searching. I have enough to go on plus I also uncovered another photo today. This is what I'm after - narrow boards with a wide-ish gap between them so there is air circulation. I'd make it so it comes apart in 2 or 3 sections so I can remove it for hauling nasty stuff.
My driver's side mirror is an obvious replacement and it flops around and also interferes with the wing window. The door paint clearly shows a larger mount area for an original(?) or at least older mirror. I need a driver's side mirror and have to replace this one. Any ideas on what would have been installed based on the paint marking? Or options for an original/nos/remanufactured mirror?
