As for the single stack.. Unless there is a good reason, I'd go with dual stacks. One on each side. As for the heat, put heat shields on it and leave a small airgap between the shields and eveything else and you should be fine.
Dual's won't work on a inline 6 if you have flapper's (hinged rain gaurds) on top of the stacks. There won't be enough pressure to keep them open, that's why I only have one 2.5inch. Mine only stays open about half inch to an inch at idle.

i promise you if you put a hinged piece on the top the pressure would build and it would come out...physics man, physics. if he is worried about that then he could just use a bent tip (turndowns) like you see on most trucks today
