Fuel Pressure

Pulling our trailer this weekend made it about 50 miles before my fuel gauge alarm started going off. Pull over when I could. Was able to limp it along for 2 miles to find a parking spot keeping the pressure around 40psi. Drove home the 50 miles to get my truck to finish pulling the camper. Running 60mph it was holding 62psi going up a hill it would drop to 57psi. I believe last time I had something similar it was the gasket on the fuel pressure regulator. Does this sound like the same issue again?

Can I buy just the gasket or the brass plunger and gasket instead of buying the entire kit?

Tore into the pressure regulator and it was fine. Moving on to fuel pump. Do you guys have a any recommended brands or brands to stay away from. I need to get it changed ASAP and we are pulling the camper again this weekend and would like to use the Ex.

57 psig is fine. If that is the lowest you see, I don't think the fluctuations will bother you.

That was empty taking it easy. Loaded trying to pull a hill it dropped to the teens. Unloaded wide open throttle it drops below 40.

Fuel filters clean I assume?

Running good under light load but struggling at high load would indicate a restriction or weak fuel pump. Main points of restriction I would see is the filters, or an issue with the foot valve in the tank.

Do you have any issues running below 1/4-tank of fuel? That is usually a sign that the foot valve has disintegrated.

Yeah filters only have a few thousand miles on them and look new still. Have never had an issue running the tank below a 1/4.

Will swap in a new pump. If that does not fix it. I will have a spare pump laying around.

New pump and new regulator and still having pressure drop. In park revving it drops from 65 to 60. On road at 3/4 throttle getting up to 60mph it still dropped to 40.

Time to setup a remote source of fuel, and plumb the intake and return of the HFCM into that. One thread; one video.

While trying to drain the tank fuel is barely coming out and then it will surge and you can hear the pump bog then i get some foaming is it possible my return loop is sucking air or is it possible i found my problem and I'm drawing in air some where.

Maybe the fuel pickup line (pump suction line) is plugged with trash. That can happen when the foot screen disintegrates.

LOL. So you're going right for the tank, no remote fuel source.

Draining the tank, you should have this setup. And the loop between the two return nipples up top needs the hose to be tight against the nipples.

Initially you may have some air that would be present in the HFCM and the loop, that that should clear out within a minute.

If you are still having issues, then if could be:
  • Filter cap not sealing
  • Quick connector at the HFCM leaking
  • Quick connector at the tank leaking
  • Foot on the pickup tube issue

Thank you sir. Your video is what i an following. After reading that forum post you expect me not to go straight to dropping the tank..... lol.

I wiggled the feed quick connector while pump was running and i could change the flow rate so i assume i have a leak there. Going to replace those. Just picking up more hose clamps. And fuel line. If course all i have in my shop is 3/8 and 1/4.

It wouldn't be a powerstroke repair without not having something.

Yeah, Eric went through hell.

so far replacing the quick connects seems to have fixed my flow issue.
