Banging, thumping and popping - troubleshooting input please While driving my 2004 Ford F-150 in 4-wheel drive, if I have to crank my steering wheel all the way in either direction and then go in reverse or forward, I got a loud metallic banging, thumping and popping noise from my front end. Hubs and ball joints are brand new, upper control arms are brand new, had full fluid service done. Truck already had an aftermarket lift on it when I got it. Any idea as to what this could be?
If you have a locker type differential, and you're making turns with the front hubs locked on pavement, you can get loud clunking when the locker differential pops its gears to allow the two sides to turn at different rates. The best thing to do when driving on pavement or any other surface with a lot of traction is to unlock all the differentials (front, center, rear) and front hubs, if you have those.

Never on pavement, where we live it's miles of dirt road before there's any pavement. As far as my hubs being locked, I Imagine they are, unless there's a malfunction with the 2-4 selector in the cab. Not sure about the front U-joints, I would have to check them.
